And I'm wrapping the short rows as I go, because I don't like holey short rows.

excellent idea! I'll do that for sure.  I haven't read though the pattern completely, as I have a few things to finishe before I can allow myself to be too tempted -- is there a point where you knit those wraps with the stitches?

Yep. You'd pick up those wraps and their stitches when you start expanding again (the row 7 repeats I'm thinking, though I don't have the pattern in front of me).

I'm also attempting to make stripes, but we'll see how that goes ...

Maybe I'm wrong, but the one laid out flat looks around 102 /104 sts wide, definitely not 120.
Maybe she meant to write 102?

I know my head definitely is not 24" in circumference.  Maybe I should just figure out how many sts I ought to co based on my own circumference.   bah    p.s. I'm knitting this in noro silk garden. Cheesy

I doubt that she meant it as 102 because if you look at the gauge it's supposed to be 20 stitches = 4 inches [slightly stretched] So, 5 stitches per inch. 120 stitches / 5 stitches/inch = 24 inches So, the directions do match the gauge given.

I would measure your head where you want it to fall, and then figuring it out based on that. So, if your gauge is the same 5 stitches per inch and your head is 19" you'll want to cast on 96 stitches [5 * 19 and then I added one to make it a multiple of 4 so that you'll have the even k2 p2 pattern.]

I made a Calorimetry yesterday with the only-cast-on-80 modification and it turned out really cool!  One thing I liked with the original yarn was the way it had made a stripe round the edge, so I tried to achieve the same thing, changing colour for the third rows from the edges at the beginning and end.  Mine was pretty tightly knitted so it's not that stretchy or floppy, but it is super-warm, and also covers up my root regrowth a treat.

This is the sideshot, which shows the hairclips I added because I thought they looked nice...

And this is the side/back view...

The next thing I knit is going to be for a part of my body that's easy to photograph, because hats and gloves are impossible!

Wow, this pattern has quite the following...

I knit one this morning while watching a couple 'House' episodes - 90 sts on size 7US needles, with only 13 repeats of row five:

It's some cheap Red Heart self-striping stuff that I've had sitting around for awhile...I just wanted to see how the stripes would work up.

Oh, and it's really grey and cloudy here at the moment so I had to sit with my head pretty much right up on the windowsill to get enough light, hence the overly dramatic angle and shadows and such Tongue

It looks really pretty aliastriona! I'm taking the day off of work, and thinking about knitting about 100 of these to give as gifts.

I'm sure this is going to sound sadly newbish... but I'm quite new to knitting and this is one of the more complicated patterns I've tried... (I suck at reading patterns and thus, I usually end up winging it. As I plan to use this for Christmas gifts, I'd like to do it right... plus I'm a bit of a perfectionist.)

Anyway, I'm only on the third repeat of row 5, but it looks wrong to me. I don't see the ribbing. I mean, I can see the first two rows have ribbing but from there it gets messed up. I assume I messed up earlier on... Probably here:
Row 3: Sl 1, work 3 sts, place marker, work to last 2 sts, turn work.
Can anyone explain this in the easiest terms possible? Like, the work 3 sts part? Do I k2 p1? Then would I start with p1 k2 after the marker? That's what I've been doing and it seems wrong. Also, when I turn, do I continue with the pattern? Like, if I end on a lone purl, when I turn would I start with the last purl and then knit?

If this even makes sense, I'll be surprised.

It sounds like you might have purled when you should have knitted to me (or vice versa).  When you slip the stitch that counts as a stitch in your ribbing, so you have to only do one purl.  The easiest way to tell what to do is to look at the row below: when it looks like a knit below, do a knit, and when it looks like a purl, do a purl.  This won't work if it's already gone to huggery though!

This is a great pattern to learn with though: short row shaping is a super-useful concept to get, and you'll be so cool with ribbing by the end of it too.
