I second the yarn pom pom idea.  It would be super easy.  Just glue on the eyes and you're done!

haha, I came across this too late!

I was looking for a sphere pattern for some toys I'm making at the moment but couldn't find any that suited my needs.  So I ended up sitting down with paper, pencil, scissors and calcultor and working out a templete for the segments of my shere.
