B tried at first, I'll give her that...

...and then my girl unleashed the beast!

Ladies, I have just got to have that hat!  Ok, maybe not in that obscene color (kind of like a bunch of popcorn on her head, yes?) , but I think it is a lot of fun.  Before you shout "Mary Jane!!!" take a closer look!  Any ideas?

It's REALLY hard to see clearly, but I am not even sure whether it's knit or crochet.  Sometimes I think "That's crochet" and then I look at another part of the hat and think, "Naw, it's knit, what are you thinking."  But for knit, here's what I suggest:

Start with a couple rows of reverse stockinette just as big around as it needs to be to fit your head, and then do a row of yos that either increases the number of stitches by half again as many or double.  Knit straight for a while in a 2x2 moss stitch (um, yeah, that's not how it's really called, I think, but I hope it makes sense) and then at the back sprial in with decreases so that it's kind of a flat top instead of a peaked one.

I really think that hat is crocheted, though...  or knit... um...

Edited to add:  PS, I really like her glasses too, and I'm SO glad that even seemingly anti-gravity pop stars' boobs look like mine after childbirth!

That is most definitely crochet.
it is in granite stitch:
Row 1: 2ch. *2hdc in same st.  skip one.*
Row 2:  2ch *2hdc between two hdcs*finish with 2hdc in 2ch at row 1.

use a worsted weight yarn (that looks like acrylic), and a larger hook than reccommended... maybe a size up.

good luck!

Haha! She was on some celebrity gossip show last night. It came on after the Simpsons or something. I saw that hat and I thought "hey, I kind of like that. Hmm... how would I make that?" and then I remembered I hate those shows and turned it off.

It kind of reminds me of the Kirsten Dunst "Pithy Hat" I've been seeing on the knitting boards.

Think that woman's job is just to follow her around and make sure her hat is on properly?

If that IS her job she should also make sure she puts a bra on before she goes out.

Couldn't resist.

Still like the hat, though.

Har.  I saw the drunken Brit-Brit pictures yesterday and thought "Omigod, I want that hat!  But in chocolate brown... or maybe soft green.".

Glad I'm not the only one with an unhealthy accessory obsession. Smiley

...I have to agree, it looks like crochet, and I think beatnik is on the money when she says granite stitch.  Huzzah!  I'm a suckariffic knitter, so all the better for me.

*wanders off to find yarn and get to work*

(and as a slightly catty aside... forget getting her a bra, someone get that girl a pair of proper panties.  I'm begging here!)

This is a pattern for a hat similar to Britney's, I've made at least 3 of them, and love them all:)
