There was this plaid trench coat I had been eying on urbanoutfitters.com, & it was part of my motivation for finally getting a job. Then it sold out. I decided to channel my emotions into making my own.

A large mens jacket from K-Mart, 50% off Cheesy...

& my materialist-induced sadness is now gone!

It's lined with a fluffy kind of material, I don't know what it's called, but it's very warm & comfortable. There are two functional pockets on the chest & one inside. The best part? I saved about $80, excluding tax plus shipping & handling.

Questions answered...
-The way I approached this was basically just like a t-shirt resizing (there are plenty of tutorials on this forum on how to do that), just with more bulk.
-I was looking for the easy way out because I just wanted it finished so I could wear it, so I didn't take out the lining or anything. I just sewed as if the two layers were one. It's pretty messy inside, but I plan to cover that up with strips of contrasting fabric.
-The fabric wasn't hard to sew, it didn't get caught or anything. The most trouble I had was with the sleeves since there were multiple layers of fabric.

Thanks everyone!

for some reason, i love how in the first photograph the jacket makes you look like the trailer park's favorite little lumberjack, and in the second you look fantastically chic.   Cheesy

great job!  super clever!
