This is a great hat and so easy to do.  I made a couple of them for Christmas gifts out of chunky yarn and they turned out great.  They were for my 14 year old daughter and 13 year old step daughter.  I did them like the white one without the ear flaps and pom pom and they loved them.  My 11 year old nephew has requested one and I have some more yarn like I used for my daughters.  I'm afraid though that if I make it like the others it will be to big for his head.  Any suggestions on how to size it down a bit?

yeah the fpdc and bpdc makes it big and fat but what if you replace that ribbing part with something else.. maybe by experimenting with the front loops and back loops.. or you can replace the ribbing with this pattern: http://www.yarncat.com/snowboarder_skullies.html

i love this hat. i am trying it for a gift and might just have to make myself one as well. miss_joy, can you tell me how many rows of ribbing you made? and how do you go about attachin the pom-poms? i pretty new to crochet and have never tried them.

So, I'm attempting this hat, which I love. And the semi-striped pattern created by the double crochet in the crown of the hat is where I'm having some trouble. That striped effect I'm only getting on the inside of the hat. Am i going through the wrong stitches? I'm confused. I've made hats before, but not with double crochet. Any words of advice? Thanks.
