Hey everyone. I am in awe of all these wonderful ATC skills. i have just gotten into them (i've made 1 so far....) and i have tons of ideas.
I was just wondering where you find materials for them, such as vintage photos or letters such as these:

(pjmclnj i hope you dont mind me using your photo as an example, i can delete it if needed)

Do you just happen upon these items
or am i just not looking in the right places?

Start saving scraps! Fortunes from Chinese fortune cookies, fun ads in magazines, wrapping paper, anything can be used for atc's. One great source is the internet. Google some images! The writing you see on the card you referenced is from a label maker. Target frequently has them on sale. The key is to start saving like a magpie, and use it for your cards!

Edit: I was posting as Rackycoo was, lol.

There's a multitude of free images on the Internet. Check out magazines, TV guides, Free Real Estate/Car mags, coloring books.

Start looking at your grocery labels in a new way.

At your local craft stores, hit their Clearance isle.  Only go down the Scrapbook isles on Payday, lol.

Check out the thread here that has to do with ATC links. Lots of great places to buy trinkets.

Cute!

I use art.com. They have some great works of art...the classics. Plus go to the dollar store!!! There's tons in the kids, stationary, and craft isles that have stuff that can be used! Also, you could personal swap with someone to get started! Someone on here made an awesome ATC starter kit for a personal swap...sorry, but I can't remember who. But maybe if you ask nice they'll swap with you too!  Grin

Yep, in the Sweat Shoppe Swap R5 (scroll past the first pic):
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=132411.msg1324000#msg1324000
There's a whole bunch of neato stuff in it (hey, I've got some of those shiny stars, though they usually end up glued to my forehead instead of my art).

Just keep everything that catches your eye...right now I've even got a toothpaste box stashed away 'cause it's holographic.  In small enough bits I doubt anybody will be able to name the source Wink

I have an entire dresser devoted to my "collection"  Its one of those tall skinny seven drawer dressers that is FULL of little bits and bobs (eg scrabble tiles, bottle caps, beads, sequins, buttons, bingo chips, small bits of old jewelry-the second hand store is my good friend!)  Then there are the actual "art" supplies, acrylic paint, watercolours, markers, pencil crayons, gel medium, bleach pen, sandpaper, gesso. . . .

I have massive quantities of scrapbook paper, old books (especially foreign language) from the library, newspapers I picked up on my travels, old magazines from the 50's, old cards, little metal hardware store bits (I don't even know what they are). . .   the key is to be an obsessive hoarder like racky said-now everyone I know gives me weird stuff, its great!  Anything more of a vintage style is probably easier to find with a Google image search, though I have had lots of luck finding cool pics in second hand books and encyclopedias.

The best sources (besides everyday stuff most people throw away) for me are the local dollar store, my second hand store, garage sales, then the hardware store,  and if I have to Walmart, Micheals and the local scrapbook store.  Theres lots of great shopping online, but I find I get way out of hand (dollar wise!) way too quickly to do much of that.   There have been a few paper and ephemera swaps here on craftster (and I think a new one is trying to start up) that can yeild lots of cool new stuff to work with.  Once you start looking around, there are endless possibilities!

p.s.  you did see that on the shop my sweat shop swap 5-it was VERY popular!

ohhh thank you so much for all the tips

i just looked this old 'craft' drawer in my kitchen that i havnt touched since i was 5 (now all the stuff i use is in my sewing room) and i found a goldmine of coloring books, colorful paper, shiny objects
i'm quite excited!
and i just remembered, i bought a couple magazines from the 50s to make something for my friend a year or so ago and i'm pretty sure i still have a lot of the magazine left over

*wiggles with joy*
