hi- does anyone know where i can buy this? haven't seen it in any fabric stores? need it for a lining - thanks

I believe that you are looking for Faille.  The content of the faille can vary.  It can be a non-washable fabric such as rayon but it also comes as satin and even silk.  Denver Fabrics has faille backed satin.  There is also a tafeta that looks like the inside of old books that first came to mind when I read your post.  The tafeta has a woodgrain look to is as opposed to a straight pattern such as faille the tafeta is called morie'.  However, tafeta changes color when exposed to perspiration and is difficult to keep pretty.  Depending upon fabric content, the satin might be a much better choice.
