So, during the largest ATC swap ever, I occassionally thought about questions I would post on an ATC board if there were one.  Here's one of them:

How do you use paint in ATCs?  I don't have any fine art experience at all, so I don't know how to draw or paint.

I use paint & gesso mostly in backgrounds, especially when I'm using a background with a heavy pattern or very strong colors -- I smear the paint around to mask or dull the color, or to soften the pattern of the background.  I also use it to enhance details of the background, mostly by leaving some areas mostly clear of paint.

Given that I can't draw and know nothing about painting and actually don't know what the heck I'm doing at all -- what else can I do with this stuff?  (links to how-to's would be especially helpful)

Acrylics and watercolors are perfect for ATC work. You can use both to make backgrounds or to draw or fill in color to drawn or stamped images. Have fun with them. You can thin out acrylics to make a wash of them for a hint of color and blending watercolors on a sheet of watercolor paper to use as a background is sometimes amazing when you see the results.

As pjmclnj said paints are nice for rubberstamped images - here is one I did with watercolors - be sure to use stazon ink or emboss your image before using paints so your stamped image doesn't smear.

you can also use watercolor for a wash of color for the background - putting salt on it and letting it dry leaves a interesting pattern.

Another thing you can do is print your image out of your computer printer on watercolor paper, color wash around it then rubberstamp over that like in this journal page

I can't draw either.  When I need something drawn, I look for patterns online. I mostly use coloring pages. They are available for free in almost any subject. Just do a search. As for use with ATC's, save the image, open it in a printing program and make the image 2.5x3.5. Here's an example:

I colored it with a Paint program but you could do it with watercolors or crayolas, etc.

Thank you *so* much for the great ideas for using paint/ink/watercolors/etc.  I love the rubber stamp and coloring book ideas.  I am 35, and the 6 bottles of craft acrylic paints sitting on my table are the only paints I can ever recall owning!  And I bought them last week!

Never too late to start ANYTHING.  I thought you were going to say that you are 35 and bought your paint at age 10 or something, lol. I was going to suggest new paint. Grin

I dare ya' to step out of your comfort zone!!
