I didn't use a pattern, and I have never written one, but I will try to come up with something.  it might take a day or two.  I may just have to make another and write it down as I go.  For the pompoms, I used a pompom maker that I got from a great aunt.  I haven't seen the exact kind around , but I Lion Brand has something similar.   http://pages.e-yarn.com/6030/PictPage/1922208416.html

For those of you looking for something similar there are some free ear-flap hat patterns from Interweave here that might work.  I don't think any of them are as small as this one though so I'd love a pattern that was specific to babies like this one.

Ooops, oops!  I got so excited about the cute hat that I didn't realize I was in the crochet section!  The knitted hat link probably won't do anybody any good in here.  Sorry!    Darn!  Now I wish I knew how to crochet.
