i made this with super chunky yarn and an N hook. It worked up so fast.

Here's the pattern
Chunky Ear flap hat.

No gauge yet.

Rnd2.  Ch2, hdc in same st, 2hdc in each hdc around, Join with sl st in top of ch2 (12hdc)
Rnd3.  Ch2, hdc in same st *hdc in next st, 2hdc in next* repeat around, Join with sl st in    top of ch2 (18hdc)

Rnd6.  Ch2, hdc in same st, *hdc in next 4st, 2 hdc in next* repeat around, Join with sl st    in top of ch2 (36hdc)
Rnd7.  Ch2, hdc in same st, *hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next* repeat around, Join with sl    st in top of ch2 (42hdc)
Rnd8.  (changing to dc now) Ch3, *dc in next st*repeat around, Join with sl st in top of    ch2 (42hdc)
Rnd9-12.  Repeat row  8

Don’t fasten off

Ear flap
Row 1.  Ch3, dc in next 9 st, ch3, turn.
Row2.  Dc dec next st, dc in next 7st, dc dec last 2 st. turn
Row3.  Ch3, dc dec next st, dc in next 5 st, dc dec last 2 st.turn
Row 4. Ch3, dc dec next st, dc in next 2 st, dc dec last 2 st.turn
Row 5. Dc dec last st.
Row6.  Ch32, sl st  back down chain fasten off, weave in end.

Next ear flap

Attach yarn with RS facing 7 st away from last ear flap (this space is the back of the hat it will be a shorter distance than the front of the hat.

Repeat instructions for other ear flap
(it would also look good if you went around the edge in sl st as a border.   I didn’t though.
