I'm still really confused. This is where I'm at right now:

It depends if you have the knit side facing you or the purl side. With the knit side facing, insert your needle into the edge stitch as if it were a stitch on your left needle and you're going to knit it. With the purl side facing, insert your needle from behind and purl it.

Okay. If the needle on the right has the yarn end on it, start picking up on the edge that's just under your tip.

After that I just knit that row of picked up stitches? Because the pattern says "Pick up at purl 10 sts". Thank you for the help so far, I just really want to get this pattern right the first time.

Then you're supposed to pick up with the purl side facing you. I couldn't tell where you were in the picture, and if you turned the work around so the front side was facing for the picture, then that confuses things. The last stitch you did will have the yarn end coming from it, and you pick up directly below it.

this is SWTC Karaoke in Splash.  I'm on the fence on how I feel about how the colors are turning out.   Undecided
I know I wouldn't wear it as a scarf.

Yes, the purl side should be facing me since I knit the last row.

It depends where you are in the pattern, which direction you're going and if you're at an edge or not. You said the pattern says "pick up and purl 10 sts" so you're at the center square. The note says:
" Note: Directions for Center Square and Right Edge Triangle will instruct you to pick up sts along the edge of a square. The first time you work Section 1, you will be picking these sts up along the edges of the Base Triangles."

So from your picture it's the first time through and so you pick up alongside the base triangle that's right below the tip of your right needle. The right needle will be the one with the yarn going back to your skein and the purl side facing you.
