Beadstyle magazine, which is done by Bead & Button magazine, is great for beginners in beading who want to learn some new techniques other then putting beads on string (they do that too, but they pretty patterns for putting beads on string). I made a ring from a pattern they had, made with some thick wire, and I constantly get compliments on it. Check it out if you're interested.

I totally agree - BeadStyle was unintimidating when I first started out making jewelry, but it still provides me with amazing ideas for adapting patterns and colour combinations now, when I've been beading for a few years.  Another one of my favorite jewelry making magazines is Creative Jewelry put out by Paper Crafts magazine.  Both magazines provide simple advice for product selection and beginner techniques, but they are also great for inspiration.
