I think you may have had a good idea though with the smaller hook slip stitches, I would even consider making the middle-est row with some increases and decrease again to the same number to finish the body then for the boarders, decrease a few more while slipping, and furthermore, fabric stiffeners, either liquid OR starches, could give you a rigid effect! Smiley
