Hello People from Nebraska!
I'm going out to Omaha to interview soon and I'm thinking of moving there for the next four years.  I'm flying out and will have some time to check out the city and of course I was wondering if they have some cool yarn stores downtown or at least crafty stores.  I was wondering if there are any cool stores nearby if not downtown.  Oh and while I'm at it I'm looking for a good restaurant that says "here is what omaha steak really tastes like".

Omaha is an amazing town for craftyness.
There are several yarn stores
Many AMAZING resturants.... trust me you'll love more then the steak
Atleast 33 drama stage theaters
Many generic craft and art places such as Dicks and hobby lobby
More then 4 malls
Several bead stores
FANTASTIC Museums

you definitely have my attention! woot woot now i'm excited.  can you tell me where the yarn stores are downtown because I think i will be down there for a while and I want to check them out??? thanks

downtown there arent many, its because Omaha is actually really BIG.
Its a bunch of annexed areas. I think I can actually get the yellowpages for you that say all the places if you want them!

The closest to downtown is Personal Threads -- it's on 78th and Dodge, on the south side.  It's pretty cool, a little cramped, but with a great selection and friendly people.

The other one is String of Purls, and I'd avoid that one.  Snotty folks and a whole lot of novelty glittery yarns that are priced above MSRP.  (Plus, they're not kid friendly.  I don't have kids, myself, but the way they treated this friend of mine with a baby was -apalling- for a retail store.  Haven't set foot in there again.)

There is one more, Touche' -- on 63rd and Blondo.  It's got shorter hours (Tues - Sat, 10am to around 3 pm), and a much smaller selection, but they sell local people's dyed and handspun there, too, which makes me love them.  The Stitch & B*tch is there, on Thursday nights, from 5p.m. to 8 p.m. or whenever we're done.  It's a small group, but a really fun one.

I don't know if you're a thrifter-type person, but the thrift stores here in town are freakin' amazing.  Lots of them, cheap prices, and people here haven't quite discovered them as an art supply/craft supply/raw material warehouse yet, so things aren't as picked over.  It's niiiice.

I took knitting lesson at Touche, it's on Maple. I wasn't very happy with the instructor because she was mostly socializing.  They have a very nice selection, but the service is cliquey.
