any ideas?  i want to make a menorah for my apartment (i've been using a kiddie one that i bought several years ago and i think it's time to have something a bit more grown-up)... and i'm not sure where to start.  my decorating scheme is hipster-retro-mod with furniture from ikea and the 1950s and a huge superman mural and all sorts of goodies, and i'd like something to go along with that.  reconstructed out of old kitchen appliances, perhaps?  hmmm.

How about something sort of industrial, like hardware nuts attached to a wooden or metal base?  You could dress it up or funkify it or just leave it au naturel....

I have been thinking about whipping up a menorah myself and also sad that there weren't too many Jewish holiday themed posts.   So I am thrilled to see your post!

I think it would be awesome to make a menorah out of an old toaster!  If you could rig it to pop up!  That would be awesome.  It might be cool with a blender if you use long candle-esque bulbs that spin of course!!!!!!

I'm not Jewish but my sister-in-law-to-be is so I thought it would be a nice idea to give her and my brother (who is also not Jewish) a Menorah at Christmas. I know... sounds weird. But she has spent Christmas with my family for about 10 years now and since the two of them celebrate everything together it just seems like a natural thing to give to them. Am I being tacky?

I would like to make it out of colored glass. Maybe a mosaic thing. Hmmm.....

No, in fact it is very sweet and thoughtful. I am sure they will both appreciate it very much.  Mr. Boo isn't Jewish and when his family is kind enough to acknowledge my holiday too.......I always get a bit verklempt.   Wink

But you may want to give the menorah during Hanukah so they can enjoy your lovely gift during the holiday.  This year it starts Dec 8th.

Ooo, it's "early" this year (relative to Christmas)!  And I agree that giving a menorah to a mixed-religion couple would be a very thoughtful gift...especially since you say she's spent all these years celebrating Xmas with your family...and even more especially if you make it yourself!  Of course, should you do so, we'd appreciate seeing a picture....

Also, they should get it by or before the 8th so they can start using it on the first night.
