I have this old mantlepiece from my grandfathers house. I've stripped it and i think it would be cool as a headboard for our bed. I'd like some opinions on what to do with it. I'd like to lighten the color- you can't stain things white can you? Maybe a crackle off white paint. What do you all think?

as you can see my bedspread is red, it would be nice if the mantle complimented it as well.

I can't see the pic - but you can white wash it - maybe mix white latex paint with some glaze, and wipe on, wipe off layers until you get the look you want.

Or you could do a white "dry brush".  That's where you just dip the tip of the paintbrush in the paint, dab it on a paper towel to remove any excess, and then paint your headboard with what's left.  The wood would still show through once dried.

Either technique, I think, would look awesome on that mantel.  Wish I had it.

If you can't convince them, confuse them.

What an awesome idea!!!

I think you might be happier just staining it.  Paint tends cover up a lot of the character of a great peice like this and wood tones tend to compliment patterns, where a white finish would compete with your bed spread more.

You could also upholster the opening to make a comfy back rest... Just cut a board to fit, glue on some foam and staple some fabric over it.  A shelf along the top lined with candles would look groovy too.

Not so comfy, but I thought the mantle would be a cool frame for a piece of interest in the centre - something curvy and wrought iron - or painted to look like wrought iron, like the decorative grills from screen doors, or decorative old balustrade.

Thanks guys. I have been trying to think of what i could put in the middle. I also like the idea of a shelf across the top but am wary of things falling on my head.
I'm going to look at stains now!
