I don't know about in the US but in the UK lots of charity shops ask for used stamps. They sell them for money for their charities. A charity I occasionally try to raise money for is looking for used stamps right now actually: http://www.pet-rescue.org.uk/recycleappeal.html

we bought a futon couch at ikea that left a little to be desired in terms of color. i re-covered the white slipcovers with this crazy antique upholstery material. it's got a lot more character now!
