here is a hat I just finished!  I'm very proud of it - it's a new style and i like it a lot.  it's for an HGTV show called That's Clever whose crew will be showing up *tomorrow* (eep!) to prep me for filming the production of this hat.

here are all its component stages.

all those buttons (20 total) were fun to buy but man were they expensive.

Edited to add:

Whew!  It went great!  I was nervous but things seemed to go really smoothly.

What a whirlwind! There were only four of them, two cameras, the sound guy, and the director - the producer ran the B camera. I built a little set in the middle of my living room and pretended to make a hat on it.

It was really fun, although for the first time in my life I was The Talent.

This was a strange experience - right when they showed up, I directed them around a little, Showing them where to put stuff and where to park, but then very quickly & clearly my role was to get out of their way until they were ready for me.

We spent the first part of the day with me and the dog doing laps of the alley on my bike - I can only imagine how ridiculous that part will look. It got tense at the end as we went into overtime but what fun! I can't wait to see it, but I'll have to - spring at the earliest. I'll know in January when it airs.

I was being lazy and using the images from my blog post instead of uploading them properly to my own servers.  I'll fix it now.  Sorry guys!

I love your cloche!

It's definately the sort of thing I'd wear on my noggin.
And congrats on your TV debut
You'll have to let the American/UK people know when the show is airing!

Thanks guys!  It's funny - I had a total breakdown yesterday trying to get my quarterly taxes done - I think in comparison this TV thing will be fun.

In my store?  Yes... I will try to list them in the next two weeks.  After the show I will have to finish all of the early stages the rest of the way, and fix any hurried places from filming.  One of them is being donated to an auction for the San Francisco Bike Coalition - it's one of the reasons I chose the bike theme.

The scariest part is doing the bicycle stamp - so much work has gone into the hat at that point that getting it wrong would be crushing.  I was so afraid with the hero that i stamped it super-light and had to spend a ton of time touching it up.  Need to be more forceful during the filming because I think they will not be happy with me if doing just the bicycle takes half an hour.

Whoo!  I am tired but filming went well.  I have a few stills from when they were shooting - I will try to post them later.  It's too bad but I don't think the episode will air until the middle of next year.  They've got to edit 7 hours of shooting down to six minutes... guess that takes a while!  I hope they cut out all the ums.

sure!  I was actually left feeling like maybe i should have stencilled it, but i know that process would have had its own problems too.

i bought a sheet of rubber from the art supply store - i have linoleum carving tools so i just used those but man, carving linoleum is a lot of work.  the rubber is the consistency of an eraser and is far easier to carve.... will wear out quicker eventually but since i am not printing on paper or smooth fabric this will be less of a problem...

i drew a bicycle onto the rubber with a marker and just basically drew around it with the carving tool - again, because the stuff is so soft it's pretty easy.  you should start with the most complicated section of the stamp, though, because if you're going to totally bollix it you want to know sooner rather than later.  my stamp has a big chunk taken out but i just fix that part after Cheesy

because of th depth and texture of the surface i was printing on i had to dab the paint on with a brush - normally with this kind of printing i would have used a roller but i tried that and it did not put enough paint onto the stamp for the needle-felted surface to absorb.  regardless, i had to go back after and add more paint.  it was easy though, because the stamp gave me a very clear guide.

i just used a black textile paint, i think black acrylic would work just fine too.  if you are doing something on fabric that must move then the type of paint is more important because the heavier acrylic may make it hang funny.

and since I don't get tv at all, I am hoping to digitize the segment and host it someplace - my bit will only be six minutes long so hopefully I can make this work.  It won't air for soooo long....

maybe you could host it on the felting forum site? the stamp is impressive, i know i'd botch it if i tried  Roll Eyes
i have to add an aside about cyclists though, the ones in london think they own the sidewalk Tongue i think i'd be more likely to do one stamped with a crushed bicycle, lol!

I have a a place to host it, just not sure if i can manage the technological feat.

and i think that bikes belong on the streets, for sure - although having seen the streets in london i don't blame them for taking the sidewalk!

Oh my, that is so wicked sweet. Bicycles and fiber arts are a match made in heaven -- I'm in the middle of knitting a pair of socks with a bike wheel motif that I'm going to post really soon.
