Here I am in all my glory.  I made everything you see except the wig and the stockings.  I did dye the feathers and do all the trims on the wig, as well as powder the wig (rather poorly).  I used a modifed J.P.Ryan pet-en-l'air/robe francaise pattern for the main robe and petticoat, a heavily modified Butterick pattern for the stays, and I used the instructions from www.marquise.de for the chemise, except with short sleeves and a stationary pleated neckline rather than a drawstring.  The embroidery on the stomacher is stemstitch and beads. The shoes are reconstucted to better resemble 18th century shoes, and I made little "diamond" shoe buckles.   My favorite part, though, is the necklace, which is beaded to look like blood droplets, and bears the legend "les permettre de manger du gateau".  That, of course, means "Let them eat cake."

And please pardon the slightly bemused expression and the more than slighly crooked trim on the skirt - 2 a.m. on one's birthday is not the best time to decide to craft...

Fabulous work.  While the dress and shoes are wonderful, I'm especially impressed with the necklace - which is brilliant.  Have a very Happy Halloween!

I think the general concensus is that the necklace rocks.  It ties in so wonderfully and is waaaaaaaay better than body paint.  I admire your sewing skillz.  I go a little wonky being on the sewing machine after a time.

Your costume is beautiful!  Very clever with the necklace, I thought it was paint until I read your post.  I hope to make something as elaborate and beautiful someday  Smiley

Thanks all!  I started working on this the last week of July, and about forty five hours of work went into the dress and underpinnings.  The wig and jewelry were another four or so.  I have to say I'm proud of this one - it is by far the most complicated and intense costume I've ever, ever made.  There are more pictures on my blog:
http://www.becomingmarieantoinette.com

The necklace was a one yard piece of 1/4" red satin ribbon.  The blood droplets are just bead fringe, with firepolished crystals at the end.  The legend was written on in silver gel pen, in my very best penmanship.  It ties in a tiny bow in the back, and the ends trail.

I dyed the feathers with ordinary RIT dye, prepared double strength with boiling water.  I let them soak for about twenty minutes, rinsed them well, and used a hairdryer to restore the loft.

There you have it.  I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I'm glad you did, too.

That is absolutely amazing!!!!!  You are rediculously patient and talented.

I may actually make a choker similar to yours to wear with my normal clothes.  I thought it was paint too.  Ingenious.

What do you mean when you say the legend was written on in silver pen?

It's gel pen - the kind that works on dark paper (sakura brand).  I chose silver to complement my embroidery, but I think any color would work.
