I made these little cakes for a Bake-off I am having with a co-worker.  The inside cake is pumpkin spice and the frosting is cream cheese based.  The deorations themselves are make with gum-paste, but I think I might try fondant or something else next time.  As I've never worked with fondant before, is there anyone who can tell me which is better for forming little figures and such?

those came out great!  I don't know what gum paste is, is that like marzipan (almond paste) that's all I've used and it's pretty easy to work with IMO

I think gum-paste would be your best bet, but it will dry and be harder (it's suppost to be) then the rest of the cake (frosting)

Thanks for your compliments everyone!  I won for "Best Looking" cake.  We wanted to be nice and voted for every entry in one category.  I won my category by a landslide though!

Nosnin, in your experience with gum paste, is there anyway to keep it from looking too sugar crystally?  Or did I just not mix it together right?

Yup, that is colored coconut.  It proved to be a huge pain though because it got everywhere!   Roll Eyes

Next time I'm gonna stick it to a layer of frosting, or maybe just try something else completely.
