HOWDY!

Man, that is an EXCELLENT scarf!!!

It's hard to see the detail in the picture, but it looks like the middle pieces are granny squares and the borders are a kind of bobble stitch.

I knit and crochet myself and trust me, if you can knit you can definitely crochet!  If you're looking for a tutorial, I recommend the Harmony Guides.  There are 7 volumes - 1-5 are for knitting, 6-7 are crocheting.  Check out volume 6 - it's an excellent tutorial has patterns for granny squares and the border you're looking for!  You can find it for under $15 on Amazon or eBay.

I hope this helps.  Best of luck!

P.S.   Where did you find that scarf?

I'm pretty sure the whole thing is puff stitch.  If you look on the site, the matching hat shows the square much better:  http://store.alloy.com/catalog/browse/productview.asp?PRODUCT_ID=20916&PARENT=100&PARENT=1015#   I'm pretty sure it's varigated yarn, then a ring with puff stitches for the first round.  I'll try to work out a pattern sometime this weekend.  Also, here's stitchguide's puff stitch page:  http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/crochet/stitch_pages/cro_puffstitch.html

Here's what I came up with:

ch 4 and join with a slipstitch to form a ring
Rnd 1: ch 1, 12 sc in the ring, join with a slip stitch to 1st sc

Rnd 2: ch 3, puff stitch in first sc and in every sc around, join with a slipstitch to ch 1 of 1st puff stitch (12 puff stitches)

Rnd: 3:  ch 3, puff stitch in same space as join, *ch 2, sc in next ch 1 space, ch 2, sc in next ch 1 space, chain two, puff stitch in next ch 1 space, ch 1, puff stitch in same space, repeat from * untill end.  Final puff stitch is made in same space as 1st one, ch 1, join to top of 1st puff stitch  (8 puff stitches, 12 ch 2 spaces, four corner chains)

Rnd 4: ch 3, sc in next ch 2 space, (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 space) 2 times, ch 2 sc in corner chain, *ch 3, sc in same space. (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 space) 3 times.  repeat from * twice more.  in the final corner, sc, ch 3 and join to the first sc.

Rnd 5: ch 1, 3 sc in every ch 2 space around, 5 sc in each corner chain, join to first sc, fasten off.

I know that's probably kind of confusing to read, but if you try it out, you should be able to see where the stitches all go.

I posted a link to instructions for the puff stitch in my last post, just do those the way stitch guide says.

I'm pretty sure that the squares in the scarf you posted are made with varigated yarn, and the two different colored squares are made just by starting on a different color in the repeat sequence.  I didn't have any varigated yarn lying around to experiment with.  With the colored yarns, you'd use varigated for the first 3 rounds, then switch to the solid color for the last 2 rounds.  I think this pattern would work best in sport weight yarn if you could find some you liked, but worsted will probably work.  You want to use a kinda big hook for the yarn, so the squares will drape better.

Anyway, you just do a bunch of those squares, and sew them together.  There's an edging too, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it, lol.

it means to crochet the sc into the circle (ring) you've just made as opposed to sc in chains. take a look at this video http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/crochet/stitch_pages/cro_single_crochet.html

that's a great website for learning stitches btw. I just (re)learnt to crochet this past summer and that site helped me out TONS.

And to Beppycat, awesome granny square. I really liked what you came up with.
