My family has a huge pumpkin carving contest every year. Here are our results!

The one with the nose that is actually the 'handle' was the winner.

oh! and instead of cutting the top, we did an 'ode to Martha, and cut them at the bottom to empty out the contents. Super easy to lift and light that way.

Yay! Halloween is the greatest!

So.. I work in the Special Collections department of my university library, and we had a pumpkin carving contest at work. I was volunteered (being the "crafty" one) to carve the pumpkin (despite the fact that it had been ten years at least since I had carved a pumpkin, and even then it was the obligatory 10 year olds pumpkin with triangle eyes). Well, we have a large collection of artist books (we have all of Julie Chen's books, except one. Seriously, it's my favorite collection in the whole library).

So, for the contest, I decided to make a pop up artist book. It was going to be a real pop up, but it got to be too late to make it too intricately, so I just made the figures stand up.

my pumpkin won second place! It was really hard to get some decent pics... the "pop up" part didnt turn out as well as I wanted because I should have used smaller strips, but ah well.

I just the pumpkin into strips to simulate pages, and bound them with a coptic stitch

The paper thing with the barcode is a flag - our Special Collections cataloger actually catalogued it for me! If you search "it was a dark and stormy night" on the WMU database, the second entry is my "book". haha

The things hanging from the top of it are bats! carved from the pumpkin seeds.

I'm no longer a moderator, but I will always love June 2005 - October 2008

Oh my goodness!  I love your jack o lantern "book"!!  It looks fabulous and I adore the concept behind it.  I just love Julie Chen's books, too.
