I've been working on this bag all week, I think I've finally gotten over my urge to finish things in one sitting and thus preventing most screw ups and anger fits.  Roll Eyes Haha. Anyway, I was planning on making this type of bag for a swap, but I wanted to make a prototype first, and that's how this bag was born.  Cheesy

I really like the design, although my construction isn't great. But anyway, what do you think? Criticism welcome. Smiley

I like it! It will also work out as a pillow when you make it bigger! hm I think  I am saying that because it looks so filled in the picture. Though I really love the design!

Thank you. I used interfacing to make it stiff, but I was having a hard time getting decent pictures so I stuffed some tissue paper in it. Smiley

Thanks guys! Smiley
loves2experiment - It is infact lined, with green polka dotted fabric nonetheless. I used some fabric glue as a temp. solution because the pins were getting in my way and I am in the process of handsewing it in right now.  Roll Eyes

Newyorksewer and stick - I have seen these bags online before, and someone posted a scan from a japanese craftbook with the shape of the pieces, but I figured out the dimensions, and how to put it together. If you really want I can make a tutorial.... It's not that hard Smiley Thankfully.

I really like your fabric choices! Oh my and ther is polka dot on the inside, that just tops it off. You did a lovely job. Hand sewing the lining, you have much more patentice than I do! Smiley

I've seen a tutorial for one like this on a blog somewhere, I'm sure I have it on a bookmark on one of my computers. I think it was inspired from the same book you have probably. Seeing yours reminded me that this style is one I really want to try.

Do you think a tab loop on one end (where the top and bottom fabrics meet, centered under the zipper) would be too bulky because of the zipper? If so, I may try a short handle like men's shaving kit bags.

Thanks for posting and for the inspiration.

Yep, that is the one I was thinking of too! Ah and it answers my handle question. Not to mention reminds me how sad I was that DH didn't bring me back any cute craft book when he went to LA.  Sad

I'm glad you posted it, I think it was bookmarked on my mac, which sadly was using my living room tv as its monitor...the tv that is now out of order until the lamp/bulb for it is replaced.  Tongue

Thanks for all the compliments guys!
Wow, that tute would have made it alot easier for me!  Roll Eyes

One tip though, when you are adjusting the lining to sew into the bag, make sure it's REALLY snug, mine wasn't all that tight and now the lining doesn't lay right in the bag.

Thanks for posting your fantastic bag!!  I bought a UCHI pouch just like that but in the shape of a cube so that I could work out how it was made - thankfully you saved me the trouble - THANKS  Wink  It's such a great design.

Here's one I made today.  I added a tab at one end and a handle on the other.  It will come in very handy for a small toiletries bag:

I love your fabric combos everyone. This seems to be a perfect project for showing off great fabric pairings.

Is it insane that I had a dream about this bag last night? It may be trick to get it to look nice due to the exposed seams intside but in my dream I tried with with double-sided quilted fabric. So naturally I will have to try it. Smiley Pay attention to the crafty dreams, that is how I figured out the V pattern freidnship bracelets when i was a kid. Wink

Queenofdiy, you take really great pictures of your work.

About how large is everyone making theirs?

Thanks SewPixie.  I just take a photo outside on a chair with a white piece of paper behind whatever I am taking a photo of.

My bag is probably about the same size as lamamarco's and superstitch's.  It just fits a toothpaste tube for the length - about 21cm (or 8.25 inches).  The height is about 7cm (or 2.75 inches).

Superstitch:  Your bags look gorgeous!!!  Nice combination with the Amy Butler fabric.   The plain fabric really lifts and complements the Amy Butler fabric perfectly.

The chocolate and pink combination reminds me of turkish delight .... mmmmm good enough to eat.  *runs to cupboard to raid chocolate stash*.

can someone please explain  to me  how to make the template, or can someone send me someone i can print out?

I will work on it in Photoshop and post a link for the pattern.

So i tried making one of these using the linked tutorial and the lining was really bunchy inside the bag... anyone have an idea why or how o fix ?

You will see that in step 6, all the pieces are joined together to make the lining.  Now the problem is that when you sewed your outer together, at least 1.5 inches was taken up in your seam allowances (assuming you have 1/4 inch seam allowances) therefore the lining is at least 1 inch too big.  To fix this, when you cut your lining, overlap the top and bottom pieces (that you see in the picture on the left in step six) by the seam allowances.

Hope this helps!!

Has anyone figured out a way to construct this bag w/o having to hand sew in the lining?  I hate hand sewing, and am terrible at it.

i machine sew my lining in, i just sew it to the zipper once the rest of the bag is made. It creates an extra line of top stitching on the outside next to the zipper but as long as you do it neatly it looks fine!

Hi all!

Did anyone happen to save the original tutorial for the cosmetic bag?  It doesn't seem to be there anymore...

Here's one that's even easier - it doesn't have the seam on the side of the bag though:
