Edit: Page 2 has pictures of the semi-completed-good-enough-for-the-party-on-Friday toga!

WARNING:  The part I'm working on now was my slip for the costume, so its a bit thin.  Therefore, you can see my undies through the fabric a bit.  If you don't wanna see it, don't look past the first couple of pictures!

Ok, now onto the story:  I have a toga party for work (I work for clear channel radio) and I wanted to make my toga so I could walk around, taking pictures, without having to worry about my sheet falling off.  This is what I came up with:

So I started working on it:

I used some clothes as an example and made the skirt a little longer.  My kitties approve.

Mirror shots to see if I like how it fit.  And I kinda did...

The only thing that bugs me is that there is a little butt huggage, which I normally wouldn't consider for a work event, but this IS a Halloween party, and I really should suck it up that I'm 23 now and have a grown up's body.

The last pic is how I want the bottom of the dress to look.  I'm going to add drawstrings to the side to create the effect.  I was seeing if it would actually work.  (It would)

PLEASE HELP!   What do you guys think?  Should I add inserts to the side to hide the butt huggage?  Also, any ideas for something bigger than some string (like in the drawing) that I could add to cover my tummy?

if you live near a walmart,
their trims are realllllly cheap right now,
you could get a yard or two of a couple doiffrent kinds,
they also have very soft rope-ish looking trims that you could use as hte drawstrings (i was actualy going to pick some up for that porpus, but for my everyday wear)

i think it looks great!!

just make sure not to wear that red bra with it  Wink

Thank you!  I actually bought some white "rope" from Wal-mart for that exact purpose.  Smiley  And I was thinking of a white corset & slip for under it.

that sounds awsome!!
with a corset under it you can cinch the sides a bit more and make it 'floofyer' (my word) in the sides and back if your still uncomfterble with it Smiley

Honestly, I think your butt looks fine in the dress---but since I have the same butt insecurity (why do women get hips when they're in their 20's? )
here are a couple suggestions...

I think once you cinch it up, your butt won't show as much. Another option is, rather than attach a piece of cloth at one shoulder like in the pic, then make a cape out of it by draping it towards the opposite side and attaching it just behind the arm. Then you could trim it in gold (like the pic), or  purple (purple was the rarest dye back then, and it was the symbol of royalty).

If you want to make a wreath to go on your head, buy some wire (medium), floral tape, gold spray paint and some plastic leaves (with stems--just clip them off the main stem so you have 2-3 leaves. You can use fake flowers too--example-- http://www.crafta.com/qsa929-or.html).

Twist the wire into a hoop that fits around your head--I usually put extra wire on both ends so I can adjust it. wrap the wire with the floral tape, then starting at one end (with the leaves facing out, wrap the stems tightly with floral tape at a slant. Keep adding leaves and wrapping until you get to the end. Then spray paint the whole thing with the gold spray paint and voila! instant golden wreath!

This website shows pics of this idea: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/headgarforfl.html  Good luck!

Well first and foremost I think you have a awesome butt and I would NOT hide it if I were you. Screw that. Show it off!

Now... I think you're doing a great job putting this together and I like the draw string idea on the sides but I think I would add something sheer... almost like a long slip under. I can kinda picture it but I just think the long look of the contume would be more dramatic. At the same time I love that drawn up skirt so I would try to combine them both. Just a thought...

A BIG YES to the corset under. Lacy and sexy. Nothing showing but still sexy... that's a big yes. And I think white...

I think the purple is a great idea... in addition to the white rope.

As for the wreath on the head I made one a couple of years ago for a costume and I just bought a length of ivy. It was much cheaper than the idea of making that previous posted suggests... no offense of course... they make lots of different vines in lengths of about 2 feet or so, I can't remember exactly, and I got it at Walmart as well. Perhaps a small wreath around your wrist and even your ankle would be cute and use up some of the access...

I think the rope would make a good waist accent. I see it wrapped around once and then made to kind of drop a little sort of in a U in the front with maybe 3 wraps in all and if you have enough the ends hanging down somehow... Perhaps the purple could be incorporated in there as well.  Just wrapey and drapey...

Just a note from experience... Please don't be trying to hide your butts... Butts are a good thing to have. Yes we tend to get a bit worried as we get a bit older and see them grow and yes there will come a time when the butts can get just a bit TOO big (not that you could get my BF to agree with that) just don't worry yet. Let it show! This contume is gonna look great on you. You're beautiful!

Please show us more as you get it more complete...

Ha, I'm glad you feel the same way!  Its nice to know that it's not only me.  I live in Miami, so everytime I try to explain it to someone, they're always like "OMG NO WAY!  You're butt looks great!" and I just sigh.  Different cultures, I guess.

And thanks for the suggestion on the headband.  I was going to go with green, but gold might be an interesting touch!

That's a neat idea!  I might have to try that!

I just made a toga costume for my best friend, but hers has both shoulders covered(we went with a more historical approach), but what we did around the middle was get some rope-ish stuff from walmart and started under her boobs and crossed it over her front so it made an X and then tied it around her waist like a belt. I'll see if I can get her to stand still for some pics later
