old band t-shirt made into new underwear (with tutorial)

I bought this MXPX shirt about 11 years ago and haven't worn it in almost as long.  Still, I couldn't give it up for sentimental reasons, so behold my new MXPX underwear.

The back had to be kind of high-waisted to fit the graphic, but my butt is bigger than my dressform's so it doesn't come up so high on me.







Making an underwear pattern is really easy if you're willing to cut up an old pair.  It just takes a little practice to sew them up nicely.  First, find a simple style of underwear that fits you well and cut off the elastic, cutting off as little fabric as possible.  Next, cut along all the seam lines.  Now you have the shapes you need.

Pin your pieces down on paper, making sure the fabric is smooth, but not stretched, and trace.  Assuming you're working with a style that has a front and a back and connects with side seams, your pieces should be symmetrical.  To make your pattern perfect, only trace half the fabric pieces, and fold the paper along the center line before cutting out.  But wait, before you cut out your pattern, use a ruler to add 1/4" seam allowance all the way around to make up for what you cut off.

To figure out the lengths of elastic you need, just hold the elastic around your hips slightly stretched, but still comfortable, and cut.  Do the same thing around your thigh.  Sew each elastic piece into a loop and sew them onto your underwear, with the fabric eased evenly.  Instead of elastic, I used the ribbing from the T-shirt's sleeves on the legs.

If your T-shirt is too small for the back pattern piece, you can cut the sides off the pattern piece and move them to the front.  This just means your side seam will be further back.

I sent the insides of my last keyboard to one of the ATC goddesses--so they will thank you for another one if I can't save this one...

Don't you just love t-shirt underwear?  I would want to flash them, though so people could see how cool they were...
