Okay,

I made the edible ashtray mix.

The mix in a bowl

Close Up

Here's how to make it yourself. You need:
  • Oreos
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Candy Cigarettes

How to Prepare:
  • I removed the black oreo shells from the creamy filling and put them in a dehydrator (or just bake them on a really low setting for a while). The goal is to get the cookies to crumble into a dry powder instead of the slightly moist cookie they start out as.
  • Then, put the cookies in a mortar and pestle and break them down. Sift them into a bowl.
  • Sift the powdered sugar on top and stir a little. You want patches of black and white here and there.
  • break some candy cigarettes in half and burn the ends with a lighter.
  • Moisten the ends and "put them out" in the ash. The ash should stick to the moistened ends.

My ash-to-butt ratio is a little high but this is my proof-of-concept so I'll tray again a little closer to Halloween.

I haven't done this yet, but I have plans to:

  • Color the ends with food color to make them look more like butts.
  • Actually put it in ashtrays (I'll look at Goodwill)

Enjoy!

hey chuck_t, thats an awesome idea! i have a suggestion though, that would make it a bit easier. instead of buying oreo cookies, removing the filling, dehydrating them, breaking them, and sifting them, why not buy a box of oreo cookie crumbs? precrumbled, already dried, nice small pieces...

seriously though, thats a wicked idea. brings back childhood memories of candy cigarettes!

This would be awesome on top of something like pudding maybe, and served at a dinner party where everyone gets their own ashtray. Could you imagine your guests' faces when you served them this after a nice meal?

It'd be great for april fools!

This would be especially good if you staged people to eat the ashes randomly. You know -- no one realizes it's fake, but your "strategically placed" friend just goes ahead and grabs a fingerful of "ashes" and eats it. Great for the "eeeewwwww" factor. Wink

That is really hilarious!  Cheesy It looks so real! It reminds me of a book of "Gross Foods" I used to have as a kid. It had all sorts of recipes for foods that looked like something else, like cigarette ash or severed fingers, but actually tasted really good.

I would never have thought of that, but that's very true and I'll add that!.

A good friend also suggested "chewing" up hubba bubba with forks and spoons and adding that to the ashtray. There's always chewed up gum in ashtrays.

Here is the final dessert (as presented to the office for our dessert contest).

I'm pretty pleased with the result. I used some food coloring to add filters to the cigarettes. Real ashtrays and gum adds to it as well.

that's the greatest thing i've seen all day!

i forgot all about candy cigarettes. i remember when i was little my cousins would come over and bring me packs. i'd sit there eating them and they'd say "no you don't EAT them! you suck on them and pretend your smoking! then when we're big like our moms we can do it for real!"

Looks like chattyKathi raises a good point.

Make cupcakes to look like ash trays, and then decorate them with that!
It wouldnt be half has good as your ones, but they would be alot nicer to eat.

Thats AMAZING by the way, sooo realistic

You could also get some of those cheapo foil ashtrays to make this in; presumably you could bake a cookie into the bottom, frost the cookie, then add this mix on top.  I don't think they'd be big enough for cupcake.

Dude, that's freaking awesome. I'd love to do that when at a party with some people, and just stick it in a corner all sneaky like, then when everyone's hammered be all "OMG I'M GOING TO EAT SOME CIGARETTES AND ASH" and then you pull out the candy cigarettes and everyone gets totally grossed out and pees themselves laughing. Okay, maybe I think up too many dumb things to do while drunk. BUT THAT'S AWESOME.

Very gross! The ash/cigarettes might be cute served over little mini cheesecakes or graham cracker lined mini tart pans with pudding in them as a topping? Or even sprinkling the crushed cookies in the bottom of ash trays, topping with pudding then dusting the top to cover it all over. It would make it more filling and could be used as a sweet dip for apple slices or cookies too.
