As I'm building up the items for my own shop I'm thinking of ways to get the word out about Etsy since I think it is still fairly obscure - around here at least.  At my 9-5 I write press releases and thought something about Etsy could likely be published.

I'm looking for local Etsy sellers (Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general) that want to be considered as "featured" sellers in print and online articles. Basically all you have to do is pm me with a link to your shop and any other info you think is important. I would include you in a list in a press release I send out. You should also tell me about any local publications or websites I may not know about.

It would be up to the particular publication to decide which sellers were featured.

I'll be creating a categorized list of Etsy sellers, if I get enough sellers to join in. I wouldn't take anyone off the list unless they had only 1 or 2 items (with the exception of fine art shops), closed up shop, or had mostly items that would be considered offensive by the publication (swearing, racial slurs, graphic nudity - that kind of stuff).

That last caveat really depends on the publication as some of the publications on my list would consider some of those things a bonus - so don't hold back if you have a racy shop. I'll either put in a disclaimer or put your shop in the edgy section. Edgy will go over very well with a lot of publications and will likely have top billing for a few press releases. Then again I know Reiman Publications could find a place somewhere for country, old fashioned, or garden/bird related crafts from Etsy.

Basically there is a place for everything and the only reason I would omit your shop from the list of sellers is if it was completely incompatable with the spirit of the place I was sending it to. I can't send "Buds and Blooms" a link to a shop full of embroidered thong underwear with racy sayings just as much as I can't send an edgy urban weekly links to shops with country crafts. Though I know of a few publications that would love to showcase that whole range of craft items.

(Sorry I rambled on there but I came down with a horrible cold today and the thought of making those last paragraphs more coherent frightens me at the moment. I'm half delerious on Nyquil and a potent cocktail of nemacing germs.)

If I find out in advance that you will be featured I will let you know. This rarely happens unless the writer has to verify something with me personally but it does happen. Usually I get a tenative publication date/range that I can inform you of if this happens.

I have a two week timeframe to gather names and look at your shops to categorize and edit/provide descriptions for them - so get back to me ASAP. If I get at least a few sellers to make this article worthwhile I can post here the publications I send to and if I know of any articles. Quite a few times I've written a press release for work and never knew it was published until someone else mentioned it a few weeks later, so keep your eyes peeled. Remember to suggest any publications you know of - especially outside the Metro Milwaukee area.

Hope to hear from fellow crafty wisconsinites!

This sounds like a great idea!  I also have a regular website and actual retail store in Madison.

Let me know if I can help out in any way with this!

Thanks,

I've got one too, though I just started it this fall so there's not much on there yet.  But it's www.accessory2creativity.etsy.com

Oh, and I'm in Madison too.  The only publication I can think of at the time is the Isthmus.  Here's their website http://www.thedailypage.com/

Cool, there's an interest. I'm also compiling a list of people on etsy from WI so we should have a nice amount of people, but not overwhelming. Erin - I had noticed you somehow, and you're the first on my list of people to contact Smiley

Just wanted to let everyone know that with v2 of Etsy launching all the street teams have been on hold. I was hoping to get this done sooner but things have been slow going - I haven't forgotten about this though! It's working out well because I was recently thrown another curve ball in a swap I was organizing that ended in September so I've been super busy with that.

Heeeeellllo Wisconsin Etsy sellers!

We have a street team, and everyone is more than welcome to join up and be involved!  =^.^=

Please send http://mudandmint.etsy.com/ a convo asking to join.  *winks*  In addition, you should join our new forum- http://wist-etsy.com/forum - we're planning a WIST Craftacular!  (Well, and our forum is just a pretty cool place.  Hehehe!).

If you'd like to meet some of our members, please feel free to swing by Lazy Jane's Cafe in Madison, (http://wist-etsy.com/calendar/view_entry.php?id=4&date=20071117), to meet us and see what we're up to!  (We are, incidentally, having our first trunk show this Saturday!).

With crafting love,

I went hunting for a Wisconsin Etsy Street Team, only to find the welcome mat has been yanked. From all the bits and pieces I can gather, it no longer exists. If I'm wrong, someone please tell me!
Guess I have to join the Twin City team instead...

I joined WIST a while back and recently decided that I wanted to get more involved, and have also noticed that nothing seems to be working.

I did convo Mudandmint at etsy, though, like previously suggested (and I didn't know who I should convo - just remembered Mudandmint because they were featured in the...Isthmus, I want to say?) and will let you know what I hear back!

It was alive in december, though it looks like their home page and everything is dead now... Did you guys hear back on etsy yet? I would totally be into getting this going again. I did the Trunk show this past fall and it was a good time!

I messaged Etsy about it, and still haven't heard back other than to say , uh, yeah, it might be a good idea to clean things up.

If someone starts the group back up, I'd love to join. The Minnesota Etsy Street team has allowed me to be an honorary member, since I'm just over the river from the Twin Cities, but I can't post my Etsy stuff as being made in MN.

And on the subject of sales, look for a new topic I'm about to start...

I messaged Cari at Mud And Mint and she let me know that there is a Yahoo Group for WIST while the craziness with the official site not working is being worked out (as far as I understood - this could be the new permanent space for WIST)

Thanks for the info Fraugee - I joined last night YAY!

Zombie - I don't know why it's called a street team, but it's essentially a group of crafty people in a specific area (state/city/country), who have an Etsy shop and like to chat about local goings-on like supplies, sales, events, etc.
It's a great way to make new friends too. Sometimes they have meets at coffee houses or whatever, sometimes they have a specific chat-time in one of the Etsy chatrooms.
It's also a great way to network. You can be linked with others in the group, so if someone wants to purchase something locally, they have an easier time finding your shop.
It doesn't cost anything to join, so give it a try! I'm fairly new to street teams as well, and have a lot to learn, but I think the networking aspect is a great way to increase traffic in your Etsy shop.

Street teams dont just have to be geographic, there are tons of different ones; goth, DIYscene, people that like to eat apples upside down while sneezing & knitting...

I'm not sure where you are, but I go to a knitting group in Madison on Tuesdays (ok I'm bad and don't go every tuesday, but I do go once in a while!) that's at the Panera on Unversity Avenue.  We usually meet about 6:30, and would be happy to help you get started knitting!  If you need more details, let me know.

I am helping to organize crafters and artists for an upcoming fest in May and am hoping to get a group of Etsy shops placed together to help advertise WIST and the shops we have
Moose Fest  May 1 & 2, is expected to draw over 20,000 people over the two day event and as of right now has the following for the public:

Free ice cream for the public

Scooter scavenger hunt

National Author Linda Godfrey

National cartoonist Steve Krueger

Midwest entertainer Dan Kirk

Carnival by Calkins Midways

Pancake eating contest

Childrens archery range

10 pro fishermen taking kids on the water fishing

Music

Beer tent

A cartoon auction with original cartoon drawings from cartoonists around the country (benefits the Childrens Hospital)

Moose Fest is also raising funds for the Childrens Hospital through-out the event.

Benefits to vendors:

1)      The public can only receive free ice cream by visiting the non-food concession service vendors at Moose Fest, collecting and matching tickets.they must explore the vendor areas!

2)      All vendors at the 2010 Moose Fest will have their booth fees guaranteed not to increase from the 2010 level for a total of four (4) years! New 2011 vendors will not receive this offer.

3)      All vendors at the 2010 Moose Fest will have booth priority placement and availability for all the following Moose Fests. New 2011 vendors will not have this option.

4)      Moose Fest has a vendor referral program where you receive $10 off you booth fee for every other vendor that gets a referral and signs up for Moose Fest.

5)      There will be over night security in the vendor areas.

Advertising:

Moose Fest has several means in which it is advertised. It is listed on festival websites such as Wisconline.com, will be featured on the Morning Buzz out of Madison, over 800 posters through-out the state, Banners within Marquette County starting in February, and advertising will be ran in 12 publication through-out the country (These publications run the Moose Lake cartoon and are more than willing to help promote this great event, exposing Moose Fest to an additional 243,000 people) along with radio promotions on 100.1 FM Thunder Country.

Moose Fest will also be through-out the entire city of Montello which has two major highways running through it with a traffic count of over 24,000 vehicles a day. Two thirds of Moose Fest will be on these traffic magnets so even the passer-bye will see all the activity and want to stop. Moose Fest has also gained the attention of several state representatives who plan to attend.

2010 booth fees:
12' X 12' non-food $175
15' X 15' food concessions $250
8' X 3' small vendor table space $75 (tear down at night)
Estimated attendance: 15,000 to 25,000 people

We would love to have you here, and please share this email with other crafters and friends. If we don't see you there as a crafter we'd love to have you as a guest that weekend
Moose Fest is a rain or shine event and all vendors are responsible for tents, tables, coverings, etc. Limited electrical is available at a $50 charge. There is limited free parking for those with totally self contained RV units for over night camping. Crafters and retail/antiques will be separated within the city and crafts will be juried. Two photos required.

If you have any questions or would like to be a vendor at Moose Fest and would like an application please contact:
