Newborns in need (www.newbornsinneed.org) is an organization that provides clothing items to premmies and homeless babies. the pre-mature babies are so small that clothing items from stores are to big and they need their clothes handmade. And as some people may know, babies are expensive, so some homeless mothers cannot afford to properly clothe their babies.

Newborns in need provides handmade items to all of these parents for free. they are non-profit and any money that is donated to them is used to buy supplies to make the clothing.

There are patterns for blankets and other clothes on the website.

its a great organization, please take a few minutes to check it out.

I havent checked the site yet but I know from having my nephew be a micro-premie (1lb 14 oz at birth) that even the hats they normally have are too big. There was a different organization at the hospital where he was born that provided premie hats and blankets and a general needs (tooth paste, asprin, powder, etc) bag for parents of premies who would be spending a lot of time in the hospital. My grandmother does a lot for these organizations and it's very rewarding.  Thanks for posting the site and getting the into out there:)

by the way, my nephew is 6 months old and 12 lbs and thriving now:)

Don't worry! newborns in need takes manythings
if you can knit or crochet you can help out that way. and the only way to get better is to practice practice! think of all the blankets you can make and turn into an expert sewer  Grin

I will definately try... I know how hard it was when I took my daughter home from the hospital, and she wasn't even a preemie... she was late!  Maybe they'll need lots of burp rags?  I know I did!

im sure burp rags would be helpful!
but they are also looking for things to keep warmth in, since preemie babies can't stay warm on their own
maybe a burp rag/ blanket combo

oh yeaaaa  Wink

Thanks so much for posting this site. I'm always looking for good ways to use my crafts, and babies, especially ones in need, always pull my heart strings.

I'm wondering.... how small should a make a premie baby blanket? I didn't see any measurements for them on the site.
