Shoelace flower pins and hair clips *NOW WITH TUTORIAL*

The other day it was 80's day at band camp (we have spirit days) and a friend of mine was wearing one of those very 80's neon shoelace loopy barrettes.  I got the idea from that because I was thinking about how cool shoelaces really are.

I'd love a tutorial if it's not too big of a hassle... That's a really cute idea! I've always wanted something as cool as that to do with shoelaces.

Here is the step by step process of how I make the shoelace flowers.  The measurments for the length of the shoelace is up to how big you want the petals of the flower to be. 



supplies:
1 shoelace ( I usually can make 2 flowers out of one lace and I use a thin width lace)
needle and thread (using contrasting thread or embroidery floss for sewing the button on can add more color)
1 button
1 pin or barrette backing

1. Starting at the hard plastic end fold the shoelace over to the left so that it crosses over your starting end. If you decide to fold it to the right you will get indented petals, but if you go to the left your petals will stick out giving your flower more body.

2. Put 2 stiches into the lace one over the other to tack the lace together.

3. Fold the lace up to the left so that it creates a V shape with the other petal

4. Cross the end of the shoelace over to the right, or towards your first petal.

5. repeat step 2.

6. repeat steps 3 through 5 until you have the desired number of petals.

7. Your flower should now look like this

8. starting by going through the back sew your button into the middle of the flower. I sew a shank and a two hole button on with three stiches and a 4 hole button with 2 stiches going through each diagonal. 

9. When you want to secure your button's stich stick your needle through all the stiches in the back, but do not pull through.

10.  You should have a loop at the end that look like this

11. Stick your needle through the loop and pull until it is tight. 

12.  Without cutting your thread thread your needle through the furthest to the left hole in your pin back.

13. Then thread your needle through the furthest to the right whole in the pin back.

14. Repeat 12 and 13 twice more.

15.  Now like you did with your button, stick the needle through all the stiches under the pin back and leave a loop.

16. Put your needle through the loop and pull until tight. 

17. Cut your thread.

18.  Cut the leftoever shoelace on the front of the flower at an angle so that it doesn't fray.

19.  Pin it onto your self and brag to your friends about how you made the coolest pin/hair clip ever!

Ahh, those are too cute! I have a shoelace (yes, just one ) that's perfect for that. And I just bought a bag full of cute, funky shaped buttons from garden ridge.

Five Below...I don't know if other places have them but there are a couple in PA and everything there is under five dollars (hence the name) and they sell shoelaces for a dollar a pair!
