My first hobo was the striped hobo bag
(see this post:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=124804.0) and here's how I made it:
I used simplicity 5151 for the main shape, particularly the strap parts, and then went way off course--but in a good way!
RST= Right Sides Together
RSO= Right Side Out
WSO=Wrong Side Out
CUT YOUR PIECES:Cut 2 of outer fabric and 2 of lining fabric of above shape.
Cut 2 interfacing for the lining.
Cut your pocket and interfacing for that the size you want it – I cut mine about 12” high by 10” across.
CONSTRUCTION (all seams are 5/8” unless noted):1. Stitch together 2 outer body pieces along the sides, RST. (The pic showing is of the lining since I forgot to take a pic of when I did the outer body...oops!

) Press those open and then turn it around so that those side seams become your center seams. The body is still wrong sides out.
2. Lining up the center seams, pin and stitch along the bag bottom. (I don't have a picture of this step!

)
Pull the corners out to points and mark a line 1 ½” in from each point. This will give you a 3” marked line. Stitch on this line.
Turn the body right side out.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the lining pieces, but leave about a 3” opening along the bottom seam for turning later. Turn it right side out so you can attach your pocket to the right side of the lining.
4. Make your pocket – After interfacing mine, I folded it RST so that it became a rectangle 6” high by 10” wide, stitched around the 3 edges—sides and bottom (leaving an opening along the bottom enough to turn it). Trim, leaving the opening part untrimmed . Turn right side out. Topstitch the top pocket edge. Fold under the untrimmed part and pin pocket to your lining, centering over the center seam. Stitch around the pocket on 3 sides to the lining. Attach a closure at this point about 1 ½” down from the top edges of the lining, again centering it on that center seam line.
(There aren't any pictures for steps 3 and 4)
5. Turn the lining wrong side out again. Fit the WSO lining over the RSO bag body, pulling the strap parts all the way out so everything fits together. Matching center seams and the strap ends together, pin all around the curved edge. Stitch. Trim and clip seam.
6. Turn the bag RSO through the hole in your lining. Stitch up the hole, either by hand or machine. Tuck the lining into the outer bag.
7. Press the bag, particularly the top straps and curved edge. Topstitch the straps and the curved edge.
8. Lay one strap end over the other end, and topstitch along the previous topstitching along the 3 edges and also straight across about an inch or so away, making a "rectangular" box.
YAY, you’re done!!
If any of this is confusing or I've left anything out, please let me know, or PM me!!

**I almost forgot to show the finished product!
