I made these clutches a couple of weeks ago because I am trying to teach myself to sew on my machine.  They started out as basic canvas scraps I had left over from some paintings.  I painted the raw canvas flat, sewed a big 'ol rectangle and added some snaps.  Then I added the jute braided trim and the vintage buttons (they were my great-grandmothers, who was an incredible seamstress...why didn't I inherit her skill?)  This is my first project post!  Yay!

They look a little bloated in the pics because I stuffed them with bubble wrap!

Thanks for the replies!  I'm so excited!

They didn't take long to make...just the drying time of the paint.  I prefer to paint on raw canvas with watered down semi-gloss paint.  Then I use the straight semi-gloss paint to do the splatters and let that dry overnight.  (This is the same technique I use in my paintings and I thought it would be cool on some bags.)

Oh, and I buy all my paint in the Oops section of Home Depot and Lowe's.  It is usually $1 for a pint and $5 for a gallon.  You can find really random and awesome colors and it is cost effective!

Now I feel good about them and I'm going to start using them!

Jenny they are very pretty.  What about a purse, well a clutch is a purse, but a bigger purse, maybe jordy style.

I did make more of a typical purse style when I made these but I forgot to post it.  The pictures of it aren't very good.  Here's what it looks like.  Sorry the picture is kind of dark!

Thanks for the responses everyone!~

On all of these I just used semi-gloss house paint.  If you paint it on the raw canvas watered down it gives you that mottled look.  Then I use the end of a paint brush dipped in the paint and splatter away!  The key to good thin string splatters is semi-gloss paint, it seems to have just the right viscosity.  My sewing is improving so hopefully the next one will be even better.
