my long time best friend and i are now dating, and i happen to know he thoroughly appreciates handmade gifts.. his mother knits too, but she cant anymore due to artheritis

his birthday is november the 19th, so i have plenty of time.. what should i make him?

i won't make a sweater.. everyone knows thats a cursed idea, and i would rather not make a scarf.. any suggestions?

im stumped.
and im very angry about it.

How about a hat or fingerless gloves (or even easier, handwarmers) or an ipod/mp3 cozy or a knitted toy (if he is into those). I kinda have the same problem, my husband does not want any scarves or sweaters so I've made him an ipod cozy, a nintendo ds cozy and a hat. Good luck. I am sure he's going to love whatever you end up making! It's the though, right?!

hahaha.. yeah.
unfortunatly he doesnt have an ipod.

i wanted to do something really nice. i made my ex an ipod cozy and it only took me about two hours. it was rockin though.. so if anyone needs an idea for a manly ipod cozy email me!

thanks for your imput, i like your ideas, but dagummit nothings jumping at me.

i have roughly 264 yards of cascade pastaza in blue that is just screaming his name.. if that helps anyone. its basically a gorgeous blue worsted weight wool/llama blend

how about a messenger bag (possibly felted). If he has a laptop you could make it to fit that. I guess it depends on what he's into. I guess if you're really stuck you could always involve him in the choosing process, it would spoil the surprise, but you would know you were making something he really wanted.

It may be a bit simpler than you're going for, but what about a beanie? I oh-so-subtley asked my brother what he wants for Christmas, and that was his answer. Plain and manly, but personalized for him.

Another thing I made for my brother for his past birthday were felted cuff bracelets out of manly colors. They're like the knitted versions of those leather ones at Abercrombie and Fitch or places like that. Of course, not all guys will wear bracelets (even manly ones! Lol) but it's a thought. Good luck!

I'm currently making my boy Rosalind from Magknits May 06, I know it's a scarf but guys, especially the geekier ones, seem to love illusion scarves.  You could do something else with an illusion chart.

Making him a felted bag is another awesome idea, as are armwarmers or wristbands.  Maybe give us some ideas on what he's like and we might be able to suggest some suitable patterns

I too am going to encourage you to make a messenger bag...like Knitty's Satchel?
knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTsatchel.html

There are a lot of ways you could personalize that for him...such as adding keyfobs to the straps, intarsia, appliques or whatnot. I'm in the process of knitting one for my BFF.

Well, I'm starting a knit beanie... it was the only knit that he wanted, so I complied. Just to jazz it up a little though, I'm going to do some intarsia with his favorite college team (Gators) on the front.

I asked him if he would like anything else, but he said "No. I don't wear sweaters and for the love of God, don't make me any socks!"

*sigh* guys...

I suppose since we're on the subject, I should mention that I, too, am really stumed about what to knit my boyfriend this Christmas.

Last year I spent aaages knitting him a double-sided 6 1/2 foot long scarf in Cashsoft...

and now I don't know what to knit for him this year. I feel like anything short of a sweater would pale in comparison, but I'm deathly afraid of the sweater curse, falling victim to it once before. But...maybe a blanket or something?
