I have had alot of pictures I put up turned into hyperlinks. So let me understand this. I CANNOT link a pic from a random googled website, but if I put the pic in my photobucket account I CAN put the pic up. I don't understand what the difference is, or what the big deal is, but it's buggin me.  Can someone post a simple, not lengthy, set of Craftster Commandments?

I thought I PM'd this to you before?  No biggie, I don't mind explaining.

To prevent broken images here and to prevent Craftster viewers from draining on the the person's website from which you linked the image from.

If you link directly to a photo you don't own (you don't have a copy of it on one of your photo accounts) and the people that do "own" it (a store's website, some guy named Fred who has it on his webpage, etc.) decide they no longer want it on their page & delete it or move it, then the picture that you posted here becomes the dreaded RED X   ICK!!

If you save a copy to your own photo account & then use it here, the chances are (hopefully!) that you will know that you have used it here and you won't delete it from your account.

The goal is to prevent the all over the boards here.

You can find more info by clicking on Help at the top of the screen.
Then click on The Craftster Need to Know Guide.
Then click on Don't Hotlink to Other People's Images.
(or go directly there by clicking here:  http://www.craftster.org/craftsterguide.html#anchor9f)

It's also bad manners to use a photo without the site owner's permission, because everytime that photo comes up in craftster, it uses up bandwidth from the other site to load the picture. At the extreme, craftster could get in trouble for using up too much bandwidth on sites that aren't us.

Very very good point Emily!
As someone who has owned a domain before, it's extremely rude when someone else uses images linked from one without permission. It's called "hot linking" and is frowned upon just about everywhere.
Thats why we have photohosting places like photobucket, craftster hosting, image shack, etc. Smiley

Jean, thanks for clearing this up!

And while we're at it... Wink Making a copy of someone else's picture and uploading it into your photobucket account (or wherever) without their permission could very likely be a copyright violation.

So posting a link to a picture that you don't own (a link that you have to click on to see the actual picture) is the best way.

If you yourself took the picture, you can do whatever you want with it.

You did PM me about it, and yes I got the whole red x thing... I was just thinking about how excessive it kind of it, because I post on tons of other message boards and this one is the only one on the internet where I have found that this is an issue.  But that is my opinion that it is excessive and I suppose I am entitled to it.

The other forums you might be posting on may not be as large as this one.  With almost 75,000 members, we get a TON of posts everyday.  We need to moderate stuff like this.  Whether or no you agree, we can't allow hotlinked photos, b/c it is rude, and also reflects badly on the site if we allow that sort of thing to stay.

i didn't search for this,  Undecided that's why i won't start my own topic, but i have a question about "hot linking" (or whatever it's called). when we put something on a wist from craftster and use a thumbnail, does that take bandwidth from craftster?
