I did my mom's bathroom a few years ago. I used a heat gun to melt the adhesive on the old vinyl tiles and a scraper to get them up. I cleaned the floor with the scraper to get rid of chunks. Like someone said, the little chunks will telescope up later and you'll be able to see them. Then I cleaned the floor with a light bleach solution and stuck down the new tiles. I was able to cut them with a kitchen shear and a utility knife.

I would recommend replacing the baseboard and door transition strips just for the fact that it helps hide any boo boos along the edges. it's a nice final polish. Good luck!
