Hi everyone,

Yesterday someone signed up for Craftster and posted some really nasty pornpgraphic pictures in the forum and then sent them via Private Message (also known as a PM) to about 300 people's usernames. This was likely a combination of an actual person and/or a "spambot" which is a program people write to automatically spam things like blogs and forums. I apologize profusely for those of you who saw these pictures!

When you get a Personal Message on Craftster, the software sends you an email telling you that you have a message to read on Craftster. The person sending the Personal Message just sends it on Craftster to your username. No other member has access to any other member's email address.

The person has been banned from Craftster and they are being reported to their ISP and email provider. All their posts and PMs have been deleted. (Thank you to the Global Moderators for catching this so quickly!)

There were already a few things in place to prevent spammers but obviously they weren't enough. So I've added a few new blockades which hopefully will prevent or slow down spammers but will not interfere with people who are using Craftster legitimately:

1. You cannot send a Private Message at all until you have made three posts in the forum.

This will hopefully give myself and the Global Moderators a chance to stop this person before they get to the point where they are allowed to send PMs.

2. You cannot post pictures in forum messages or PMs until you've made 10 posts in the forum. You can post links to pictures but not pictures.

This way if someone does manage to post some spam, at least there will be no pictures that people are forced to look at. You'd have to be naive enough to click on the links to the spammy pictures. (Sorry I don't mean that to sound rude-- I promise! I just think if you are going to use the Internet you have to be smart enough not to click on links that look like porn or frauds!)

3. Now, when you receive an email notification telling you that you have a Personal Message to read, the email itseld does not contain a copy of the message. It just contains a link to Craftster where you can read the message

So this is all in an effort to prevent spammers but hopefully not punish or hinder legitimate newbies who are trying to post and send PMs legitimately.

Any comments or other ideas are totally welcome!

Leah

I actually really like these new rules. It should really help out, having to wait to pm, after posting three times sort of just makes people think twice before they spam things up.

Thanks for doing this!!  And I think the new rules sound great.  Fortunately, I had no idea any of this went on, so it really must have been taken care of QUICKLY.  Thanks again!!
