I finally got around to making one of these. I'd been meaning to for a while, and yesterday I just sat down and made one. At first I had a little trouble assembling it (I wasn't actually looking at how other people had done it - I decided to wing it), so I made two smaller ones:

Of course, after I put them together, I figured out how I should have done it. So I took them apart, and sewed it back together into one.

I really should sew buttons on, but at the moment I don't have any that work well with it.

Orchid, that's pretty awesome.  Your unique way of assembling the segments into two smaller pincushions actually creates a more stable pincushion that won't go wandering around on the crafting/sewing table.  I may have to give that try!

And, put together the regular way, it's pretty cute, too!

I think orchid has stumbled onto something quite by accident!! I agree--for a pincushion, it does seem more stable put together the "wrong" way, ha ha!! Lovely both ways!!

Thanks for all your comments!

The smaller ones are much more stable, as they were able to stand without rolling.

I'm sure anyone who's interested in making the smaller ones can figure it out from the photos, but I'd be happy to explain it if anyone has questions.

I have to giggle when I see our kids all playing together... http://www.wists.com/?q=puzzle+ball

First of all that is so cool. I hadn't even realize you could search wists! (Clearly a Wist newbie  Shocked )

and oh my gosh...I have been wisted....

Anyway I flunked at Joanns this weekend...NO velvet in any colors I liked, but I still want to make tiny velvets......I did however start to see the possibility in that embossed felt......I am determined to find something to replace the plastic globes on my tree.....

Don't be afraid of going to thift stores/charity shops/what-have-you and repurposing inexpensive second-hand clothing.  You can get some interesting fabrics doing that and often dirt cheap, not to mention buttons, zippers and other doo-dahs.  IMO, it's not worth ripping the seams; just cut on either side of the seams to harvest the usable fabric.

I agree fidget--there are so many cool fabrics at the church sales, flea markets, salvation army store, etc.--

I just chop them all up and throw them in a bin for future use--even old purses can be a source of small hunks of leather!! Wouldn't this be cool in leather?

wouldn't that be hard to sew though?

Sorry I've been gone so long. Am trying to get back on the boards. Body's thrown me for a few loops these past months and am still learning to adjust. Thanks for your patience.
