i wa sthinking of knitting a pair of thumbless mittens for my daughter (20 mos).. so sdoes this sound right? knit rib stitch on straight needles ( the wrist cuff) for an inch or two then stockinette for the hand part then do a few decreases and sew it shut?
any other ideas?

That sounds totally doable.  If you have a pattern you could follow that and then just eliminate the thumb gusset and what-not...seems too simple to follow a pattern tho, of course when i do that everything turns out either freekishly large or teeny tiny.

yeah, you could also use a sock pattern as a start - just make it shorter and no heel.
