Designed by me, located on my left hip:

My tattoo's meaning has many layers. It overtly represents a story about the Buddha, who, in a previous life, was a rabbit. One day he encountered an old man who was starving. Rather than let the man starve, the rabbit threw himself onto the old man's fire to cook himself so the man could eat. As a reward for his self-sacrifice, the gods put the rabbit's image on the moon. (Some cultures think the craters on the moon look like a rabbit rather than a man's face, so they have stories about the rabbit-in-the-moon instead of the man-in-the-moon.) The 8 lotus petals represent the 8-fold path of Buddhism. The second layer of meaning is that the tattoo memorializes my trip to South Asia, where I first heard the story above. The third and most personal layer of meaning is that the rabbit, my spirit guide, represents me, and the the moon represents my mother, a Cancer, who's ruling planet is the Moon.

This is a stained glass cover up piece on my left shoulder. It's for my daughter who's name is Beatrix, and that's the bee up there, because I just call her bee. This is session two of three. The writing at the bottom says, "... Wait, they don't love you like I love you" which is from my favourite Yeah Yeah Yeahs song.

jumping in - my tattoo

I'm 47  I got this around the time I turned 40

My mom was really really sick (dying) and while caring for her I kept having recurring dreams about having a tattoo on my hip...never thinking of having a tattoo ever before.  The pattern emerged as stylized flowers, jacobean....

After she died, I was cleaning out her hope chest and found my very first crewelwork done when I was in my early teens - I was in shock and very upset so I didn't keep it - but I couldn't believe that was the thing that I saw being tattooed.

So a little while after she died, I drew this up and had it done...

it's sort of an Aubrey Beardsley design that i hope to contiue into a half sleeve when i get money and the chance to go back to portland, oregon.

sorry it's sideways. i'm lazy at computer junk.

The first thing I thought before I even read the text was that it looked like something Aubrey Beardsley would do.   Tongue  I like it!

So, my mother was putting off getting a tattoo for 6 years and she finally set a date.  My sister came to me saying, "She's not gonna do it... so we should make her..."  So, the day of her birthday, we told her that we were getting our tattoos.  I did the research and got the hieroglyphs for mother and sister and made vector images of them.  Here they are:

Mommy got her's on the belly because as a mother-to-be she was always holding it.

Me and my sis got ours after here (just in case she tried to make a run for it.

I wanted mine to look like it was chiseled into my skin so it required more detail than their's.

It was a nice way to celebrate our family.  Too bad dad is afraid of needles.

I was supposed to get a tattoo on the night of my wedding but we didnt have enough money because my ex husband wanted a full armband .... so he got his...then it was suddenly trashy for women to get tattoos especially the large phoenix I wanted ....
we didnt last for many reasons and divorced in 2003 the night after our talk my sister in law and I decided to go get tattoos, I knew what I wanted a phoenix to symbolize my new life   Grin It took 2 hours and didnt hurt like I had imagined it would .....
2 years later the next chapter in my life began, my baby girl was born I couldnt think of a more fitting place than above my phoenix for her name, so I had it added along with the "smoldering ashes"
