My husband claimed he wouldn't like anything homemade for Christmas.  Ha!  I got him!  I made this Domo-kun scarf and hat for him and he loves them!

I used fuzzy brown felt (the kind you get off of a bolt of fabric, not the sheets), although I wanted polar fleece (I couldn't find ANY plain brown polar fleece).
Then, of course, I used white and red felt for the mouth, and shiny black shank buttons for the eyes.

For the scarf:  I cut three long strips of the felt and sewed them together lengthwise, then attached the mouth and eyes to one end (glued the mouth together and then sewed it on, hand-sewed the eyes), then I folded the long scarf over on itself (the face was inside), pinned it, and sewed the long tube, leaving about an eight inch gap at one end so I could turn it inside out.  Then when I turned it inside out, I topstitched around the outside.

This took about 45 minutes.  Note: let the glue dry on the mouth before you sew over it!

For the hat, I measured my head and then cut a rectangle that was about 2 inches longer (so, I cut it about 25 inches long and about eight to ten inches tall).  I folded over about one inch on one long side and sewed it down (since it was felt, that's all I did, but if I was using a regular fabric I might line it.  Who knows).

I attached the face directly in the middle of the rectangle, then I folded the hat over, right side together, and sewed the back, and then turned it so the face would be in the middle of the hat and the seam would be in the back, and then I sewed across the top.  (Does this description make sense at all??)

I gusseted the corners because it didn't look right just flat.   I don't know if I can explain that in words without pictures...

The hat probably took 15-20 minutes.

Anyway, yay for Domo-kun.

Domo-kun is that little brown guy (we call him Mr. Fuzzy in our family), but I am sure you could use the basic idea and do whatever you want -- a blue one would be great!

Domo-kun is a Japanese monster character.  From what I've seen he's not a cartoon but more like stop-motion animated or something similar.  He came from an egg, lives with a rabbit, and farts when he's distressed.

Here's a website on him.

yardenxanthe, good job on the Domo items, glad your hubby likes them.  I certainly would.

My boyfriend told me the other day he'd wear any scarf that I made him. I am soooo tempted to make this, but I think I'd want to steal it, so perhaps I'll make it for myself. Wink

Ok, here it is sorry my camera super-sucks, i don't know if you can even see his eyes!  I made a little hat out of the brown fleece I had leftover.  The brown hat works great for my night job at UPS!  Smiley  Thanks for a fantastic idea, my friend will love it!

Wow, domo-kun. I actually was quite confused as to what he was, thanks for explaining. I will have to make a domo-kun skullcap...wonder hwo you would make it look like he's biting your head off. Hummm (P.S. aside from being cute, does anyone else think they'd probably die of fright if they met domo-kun in a dark alleyway? Those teeth are intimadating!)

You could just put the top half of his mouth on the hat and have it end right at the brim... if you wanted to make it look like he was eating your head.

Rarghhh!

Aah! Domo kun! i'm in absolute love! there was a time when i considdered making a domo-kun shirt...but sadly i eventually forgot about it, and Domo kun himself. Last year i downloaded an .avi file of all the domo-kun promos. Lucky for me My best friend is from Tokyo so she translated them for me. Apparentally Domo kun is a really popular mascot in Japn. Being the mascot of channel 1, in tokyo (It's a news station) He is very popular with people of all ages. Aah well, kinda got off subject there...sorry. Anyway, I dont really need a scarf seeing as though I'm in southern california, and I dont really wear hats, but now that i'v seen em, i MUST make something domo kun...hmm... Grin
