I wish I could agree.  I have rats from a long time breeder and I have paid more in vet bills than my rescues.  I guess It would depend on the breeder though. I currently have 13 rats right now lost one on saturday actually. I love making hammocks though on the sewing machine.

Sorry to hear you lost one of your little ones Dorystory.  13!  I am envious - they are so loving and affection when cared for properly!  Kudos to you another awesome "rat parent"!

oh ..... I used to make my chinchilla (Mr. Cheeks) hammocks out of old jean legs
All I did was cut up denim jean legs into like four ten inch sections then poke 2 holes in the top at each end and insert a key ring and attach to the cage top....he loved it!!
I used to buy small pieces of the inexpensive manzanita wood (in the bulk section) and drill a hole and attach a keyring for him to chew on...(rats might like that too?)

I used to put clean old cotton clothes remnants in the cage and he used to drag them all over the cage
I love to hear other peoples stories on how they made their critters things!

I managed to fix the hammock.  But here is the sad twist to the story - we moved Mathius in with Jimmy (after we thoroughly cleaned the cage) and they had a few scwabbles but they seemed fine - until I got up yesterday morning!!!! Bloodbath!!!  Mathius decided to fillet Jimmy's head, just in front of his ear!  Its too shallow for stitches so we didn't rush to the vet (sorry for anyone whos mad at me for not) So we cleaned it out with alcohol (seriously - like some rum lol) and dabbed New Skin on it to keep out infections.  Embarrassed But I am so sad because hes disfigured and the poor little thing has gone through so much!!
So I feel better now, having told the story to someone other than my fiance and my mom.
I am currently working on a hanging toy with chew sticks and a bell on it - although I don't know how much Jimmy likes the bells - he constantly throws his jingle cat ball into his water dish as though he is trying to drown it.

Poor Jimmy!
he seems like a fighter though.  he reminds me of my Guinea Pig...he almost got eaten by my dog, and in his later years got 2 tumors, but he lived quite long and had a very happy life.   Smiley

That's such a neat hammock.  My rats never liked the hammocks I made them :-(

My ratties got respiratory disease (mycoplasma?) also :-(  I had one of them on antibiotics when it got bad, but it was so hard to give it to her without her spitting it out that I don't know how much she actually ingested.

I heard it's hard to get rats that don't have respiratory problems, it's so widespread.

Jimmy Bean takes his meds no without a problem - he likes them cuz its grape flavoured LOL.  Yeah I wanna take him back into the vet to have him assessed again to see how he is doing.  I noticed in the pet store there aren't as many things marketed for rats as for hamsters, ferrets, mice and guinea pigs.  No offence but I own a hamster , lots of mice and two rats and I would have to say I'd take the rats over a pet mouse any day!  Much easier to handle, not as prone to biting and proven to be much smarter (although mice are pretty smart when they wanna be!).  Anyways thanks for everyones kind words - the furries appreciate it too!

Finest pet I ever had was a very small (by rat size) bi-color female named Molly.  This was when I was a teen, and when she got sick, no vet would even see her.  I also had that problem when I had a very sick rabbit.  The excuse was that it was so cheap to replace them, only a fool would pay the vet bill.  They thought I would run out on a bill that would keep a beloved pet alive!!  Assholes.  I'm so glad vets now recognize how loved these small guys and gals are, and how long they can live if cared for with the same enthusiasm as a dog or cat.  Your hammock idea is great.  I used to take oatmeal boxes and wire them to Molly's cage at different levels.  She loved jumping from box to box, and eating the boxes as well.

That is so cute! My friend just gave me a rat,her name is Darrah.I think I'll make her one  Grin I hope Jimmy gets better.Darrah breathes really heavy when I pick her up,so I usually just pet her in the cage. She's old though and has cataracts.I didn't know about the breathing problems, thanks for sharing that.
