ok, my husband is moroccan and celebrates ramadan every year - although he's not otherwise religious at all, pretty much the same way most americans celebrate christmas even if they don't otherwise consider themselves christians.  anyway, ramadan is 30 days of fasting during daylight hours, it begins on september 24 this year, at the end of the 30 days is a big celebration called eid-al-fitr.  (yes, this is the cliff notes, very simplified version)  i was wondering if anyone had any crafting ideas that are ramadan-themed, especially for small gift items to give to friends on eid-al-fitr.  my husband is no help at all, he is an engineer and completely creativity-deficient.  Smiley  so i'd appreciate any ideas for gifts, and also any recipes that anyone has to share!  thanks!

If you can find examples of arabic calligraphy, you could embroider the proffession of faith, or eid-al-fitir.

I don't know if the people you're going to be crafting for are followers or not...

I'll look back over my notes and see if I can think of anything else. I remember a few things (the prohibition on bleeding/surgery, no eating or drinking or voiding during daylight hours) but not everything.

Isn't the Hajj performed during Ramadan as well? Maybe a photo transfer of Mecca (more specifically, the ginormous black thing they circle that I can't remember the name to...) on a pillow?

Maybe I should go sit over in the corner there with the engineer...

that's a good idea about the embroidery - i had to look up what they call the big black thing and i'm even reading a book about it - it's the ka'ba which i think basically means 'the cube'.  i'm sure it was named by an engineer.  heh.

anyway, most of his friends are also non-practicing, so the scripture might be a little much, but maybe i could find pictures of the mosque from their hometown (several of his friends here are also from fes) and frame them - i was planning to maybe give something as a sort of 'hostess gift', we get invited to dinner A LOT during ramadan, but it's mostly moroccan men with american wives, so the emphasis is much less on the religion and more on the partying.  Smiley

Duh...Ka'ba.. I knew that!

Well, if they don't follow the no alcohol thing, you could stitch martini glasses, or make wine glass charms, or something that looks Moroccan (yeah, my spelling stinks...) I had another idea, but my 3 year old is distracting...

The picture sounds really nice too! And a nice reminder of home.

How about wrapped pillar candles? Like the ones here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=63472.0 But instead of just tissue paper, you could use a beautiful green or blue tissue paper and stamp something like "Eid-al-Fitr" and the date according to the Islamic calendar on the paper before you melt it into the candle?

ooh, i hadn't seen that candle technique before, i really like that!  i meant to try to do something this weekend, but i've been fighting off a cold so spent most of the weekend in bed.  it's bad when you don't even have energy to craft!  Sad

Oh no! Take care of yourself. Only craft when it feels good to craft!!!

If you do make those candles, will you post a photo? I'd love to see one.

I may try and make some this weekedn and I'll post too, if I do.

Now go have a cup of tea and curl up in a blanket.

I usually make 40 center pieces for my Mosque's Eid dinner every year and those candles are beautiful.  I did something similar for wedding shower favors, but without using the wax paper and I wasn't thrilled by the results.  I think the wax paper would make a worthwhile difference.

Last year, I bought Madonna candles at the dollar stores, removed the labels and adhered on my own images.  I loved how they came out and had a few offers to make more.  I carve my own rubber stamps, so I first stuck on a  middle eastern city scape that I stamped onto sticker paper that formed a band around the glass candle holder.  Then I stamped out a city scape of the town I live in and attached that band partially under the first but using foam tape, so it gave the impression of a background and foreground.  Then along the top rim, I put a band of blue vellum paper with arches cut out and "Eid Mubarak" stamped along the top.  Finally, I took a VERY fine tip and added a silver crescent moon drawn with dimensional paint.

But they were really easy to do (the hardest part was peeling the labels off... I ended up filling my bathtub with hot water and letting them soak in there for a few minutes) and I loved how they came out.  I have what will hopefully be a victory party on election night and I think I'll do something similar, but with election/Americana images.
good luck,
Maimun

wow, munltstmpr, those candles sound amazing!  the cityscape idea was exactly what i thought of doing on candles, too!  did you find an image somewhere, or did you draw it yourself to put on your stamp?

thank you, nasty_wench, for the well wishes, unfortunately i think this is turning into pneumonia, if i'm not much better by the morning i'm headed to the doc to get some heavy duty meds.  i've got too much crafting to do to waste time being sick!  Smiley
