Simplicit 3807 is similar to a apron top -- views G & H -- I would not mind making a few of these.  Is anyone interested in sewing along with me?

I'd love to do a sew along with that pattern!  Do you know if that is a current (in stores) pattern or if you can only get it online?

If any one needs the link to the Simplicity pattern here it is:  http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3807  I found a pattern in my stash that is a plus size I think I am going to try first and go from there.  I just need to get my butt moving  Cheesy

OO oo oo!!  I just sewed up Simplicity's 3807 this past weekend!  I made view G, the one with contrasting colors and the longer skirt.  I'll have to write up a pattern review sometime, but it came together beautifully.  Very simple pattern--just remember to go off the finished garmet's measurements, not the sizes--it will save you much grief!

I have made 2 of these tops from the sew simple magazine. The 1st one was from a vintage indian beadspread, and the 2nd one from quilters type cottons. I am a 44 d and the large size was to big.

Edited because I finally found an active link to the pattern pieces and got them to download.  Yay!

Now I'm wondering if anyone has made the dress?  I'm trying to figure out what the deal is with the grommet placement.   Huh   Or is that for a drawstring on the skirt maybe?  Also, the dress directions say to cut 2 casings... I figure the casing must go in the back of the skirt below the opening to cinch in the waist, but why 2 casings?

Dyabolica, your tops are gorgeous!  The bedspread one is especially  awesome!

I made the dress but already gifted it and damn if I can find the pic now. The grommet is for the drawstring on the skirt and has nothing to do with the dress. The 2 casings are sewn to the back skirt panel on the dress, so you can adjust the way it fits.
The bedspread one is my favorite and its too big so I can't wear it. I need to ebay or do a swap. Luckily I still have alot of the bedspread left, to ,make another.

Great thanks!  I've been measuring the pattern pieces and they don't seem like they will match up.  I may just have to bite the bullet and try a muslin or two.   Grin

Wow dyabolica  I love your tops! I love all the hippy stuff but in the shops they never fit cos the boob section is always too small so id love to try and make something like this! Are these tops easy to make? Ive just been given an old sewing machine and have never used one before! Also, where did you get your patterns from - i cant fnd them on the website.

It looks pretty simple although I still haven't gotten spare time to try one (plus it got cold again, which killed my motivation for making summer clothes LOL!).  The pattern is here:
http://www.sewnews.com/sewsimple/sewsimple2/

You have click on the individual PDFs for each pattern piece (http://www.sewnews.com/sewsimple/pdf/a.pdf through /e.pdf and /strap.pdf).

The bad thing is that there are no directions (or I haven't found them anyway!) for assembling the top.  If you need directions, I'm sure someone here can help though.   Smiley

I have the opposite bust issue so I'm not sure what to tell you in that regard...  Maybe ask on the Curvacious Crafters board for suggestions?  I would think you'd want to make sure when you cut the top section of the bodice that it's both wide enough to go around your bust and also high enough to fit the curve of your bust.  That might entail making darts so it looks a little more shapely but that's just a guess on my part.  Like I said, it doesn't seem like all the parts are going to fit evenly but after scrutinizing the photos, I think there's a small flap of fabric on the skirty part that sticks out farther than the busty part. Wink   Again, I'd make sure the skirty part is wide enough to go around your chest/back w/o showing any more skin that you're comfortable with before cutting.

I see this thread has been dead for quite awhile BUT I thought since spring is coming, I wanted to make some new clothes! I am going to make an apron top and a drawstring skirt.

Apron top instructions:
http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diytops/ss/Apron_Top.htm

Drawstring skirt instructions:
http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diypantsandskirts/ss/SimpleSkirt.htm

I will probably use elastic in my skirt instead of a drawstring.

Anybody want to join me?

I like the thingsofcloth peasant top tute.  I have the same problem with the necklikes being too low on commercial patterns.  Now I can stop buying them in the vain hope one will fit!

I made a dashiki and wrap pants recently for the 50 projects craftalong...LOVE these tops, hope to get an apron top done this year too, I have the Sew Simple mag with the apron top and dress in it, and printed out the tute for it.

Here's my dashiki and wrap pants:

There's a really basic tute here: http://bonne1313.blogspot.com/2009/05/fast-easy-apron-top-tutorial.html

This one is technically for a kids but it has you take the chest measurement so you could adjust it easily for an adult: http://www.tiptoefairy.com/aprontopnew.pdf
