Okay, so I've been wanting a jean skirt to wear to work, but I didn't want to pay $6 a yard for the denim and I didn't think my boss would go for the cut-offs that everyone has been posting, but when I saw this big pair of men's jeans at the thrift store I thought surely I could do something with them.  Right next to those jeans were a pair of ladies jeans in sort of a stretchy tan, although not as big.  I bought them both, took them home, ripped out the inseam and realized that upside down they formed the perfect a-line skirt!  So, this is what I came up with:
First, the before pic:

And the after:

Back view (that's smudges on my mirror, not dirt on the skirt.)  I left off the hem and just did a row of stitching around the bottom to let the hem fray a little.

Then tan pants were shorter, so I had to do that skirt a little different:

This one had to get a side zipper instead of the back.  I guess b/c the material was stretchy it gave me this funky dip right at the crotch.  Moving the zipper to the side fixed it--all I did was turn the skirt so the zipper lay across my hip.   Wink

So, tell me what you think.  I know they're a little on the plain side.

I'm owned by a ball of fur, and I'm okay with that

I like the fact that they -don't- have the zigzag was-a-crotch-seam on them. They're cute!

Wow... that's awesome! I too dislike that lap-over crotch seam thing right in the centre of the skirts typically made from jeans. What a great idea. This is what I love about hanging here. You guys are so creative and I learn something every day.

So tell me again even though I read what you typed... lol
You got this look because the jeans you used were so big? The tan ones also I'm guessing... The seam in the centre of the blue skirt, is that the outer seam of the leg since you ripped out the inseam?

really good job.

Any more details would be appreciated.

Sorry I've been gone so long. Am trying to get back on the boards. Body's thrown me for a few loops these past months and am still learning to adjust. Thanks for your patience.

Maxine, that's exactly right.  The seam in the front is actually the outer side seam of the original jeans.  The hem area of the jeans turned into the waist of the skirt.  I'm eyeing a pair of my husband's black jeans, and if he lets me have them, I'll take pictures of how it works.

I like it a lot! One of my few jeans-to-skirts attempts, I spent hours and hours trying to get it so that it didn't have that crotch cross-over thing, so I can totally understand why you didn't want that. It looks a lot more sophisticated than the usual of these, especially the tan one. The ruffle adds a very nice detail.
