When I'm winging it on a top down, I usually get an idea of how many to cast on by looking at another pattern. For instance, with the one I'm doing right now I looked at how many I cast on for my wicked, and sort of worked it from there. Its an easy way to fudge on the numbers. Smiley

That's what I tend to do too.  I find one with a similar/same gauge and then decide how I want the neckline to compare.  I used my rusted root pattern to figure out the number to cast on for a turtleneck sweater I'm making up now.

I'm DONE!

And it's way too big. As in the buttons need to start at my shoulder for it to work. Otherwise it sits funny. Again with "Crafster says one thing, and my pattern does the opposite!" The last time I had a pattern come out way too small. This time, it's a tent! Roll Eyes And I'm so not trying again...this took forever to knit up.

I didn't finish the 4th ball of yarn, for those keeping score. A little over half the 4th got used.

I don't know where my camera cord is or I'd take pics. Give ya'll a good giggle this morning Cheesy

Dang, that does not sound like a fantastic knitting experience..... can you give it to another person a bit more "rotund" in your life? That way it may not forever frustrate you...  Tongue

I still have sleves to finish, dang it.

I have to pick a sister-in-law. I'm knitting for the youngest right now, as she's pregnant. It's down to Fundie Christian or Homecoming Queen...

I'm leaning towards HQ, as she's a bit smaller. But she gets to pick out her own damn buttons.  Grin

I may try sometime in the future with different yarn. I think the biggest issue is that I couldn't see my stitches enough to check guage, I'm a small shouldered chick, and the yarn was a bit thicker than called for.

Ah well. live and learn.

So far so good on mine. I think the yarn I chose is a little closer to bulky weight than I thought. I cast on the number of stitches called for in the pattern and it was just right. I'm a couple rows past where you put the sleeves on holders and tried it on and it's going to fit nicely.  Smiley

Huzzah! I've finished! Well, I still have to weave in a bunch of ends and block it and find proper buttons (after a mission to find buttons of the right size, I know have none for this sweater and about a million cool ones that are either too small or too big). But done with the knitting at least! And I absolutely love it, I'll take another progress photo once I get all the little bits done.

Shewolf - that sucks that yours doesn't fit, I hope you found someone to give it too. Sad
