I have metal belt buckles (the standard kind) and am having a problem figuring out how to attach them.  Any suggestions?

The way I've always seen buckles attached to belts and straps is that the fabric (or whatever) is attached at the crossbar that the little pokey-piece of the buckle comes off of.  I've tried to draw a diagram... I'm not sure how clear it is outside of my  head.  If you have a belt or something, maybe go take a peek at it and see how it's attached, too.
