Sewing machine needles come in all sizes.  There is a number stamped on the needle, but for now, just look at the package and decide from what it says it's for.  For example, some say "universal",   that means you can sew both knits and wovens.  However, there are other needles, just for knits, and just for wovens.  Sometimes they are sold in packages that have a needle for every weight of knit or woven.  The package will say "for heavy woven fabrics" of "for medium weight woven".  Sometimes "for sheer fabrics".  Sometimes there's a chart on the back of the package.

I like Schmetz Universal needles.

They sell them at Wal Mart.

Here's a good article on machine needles their sizes and styles.  It should help you out some:

On a side note, I love Schmetz needles, but my new Singer doesn't like them - only Singer needles (what a scam!).
