Crayon Batik
«
on:
August 23, 2004 04:53:13 PM »
Well, I checked the archives and didn't see anything like this so I thought I would post it here. I found this in a card book - Making Handmade Cards or something like that -
materials
drawing paper
crayons
iron
paintbrush (I used a sponge brush)
damp sponge
black acrylic paint
plain scrap paper
paper towels
Take a sheet of drawing paper. I used a smooth mystery sheet (the cover fell off) and a 40lb watercolor.
Using crayons, draw a random design that fills the page. Color heavily. You may need to use newspapers to pad your surface for a smoother finish.
Once you've completed coloring, take your sheet and ball it up well. The first one I did I kept crumpling and re-crumpling until the paper fibers started to breakdown. The second one I just crumpled once.
The next step goes rather fast.
Have your damp sponge and paper towels nearby. Paint the entire piece over with black acrylic paint and wipe off with the sponge before it dries. If you tend to work slowly you may want to do this in sections. You'll start to see that the paint stays in the cracks of the paper but the colors of the crayons remain. This is where how you crumple makes a difference. More crumply=more black shows; less crumply=more color shows.
Now, flatten out your paper with your hands and place it between two unprinted sheets of paper. Iron on a medium setting. Voila! Crayon batik!

The top image is the actual crayon art ... and the botom image is the top layer of the papers that I used to iorn on.
I love this
Well i was thinking, you could use one of the papers that you iorned on and use it as the inside of the card (if you used the crayon art as a card that is)
Like so...
outside
and

You're so smart! I forgot to post the plain paper, but I did notice it looked cool! And I totally love your design. I punched some circles out and lacquered them over with Diamond Glaze - this liquid lacquer stuff I got at the rubber stamp store. Looks really cool!

I am definitely going to do this. I've done something along the same lines, well sort of. I hope I remember this correctly: You crumple up a sheet of wax paper and then open it up and iron it (wax-side down) onto a piece of plain paper creating a design of wax resist. From there you can add color to your paper either with a stamp pad, markers or paints. I even used the leftover wax paper by adding color, tearing the edges and layering it on cards, it looked cool.
Thanks for posting this project.
PS- I love what blue4 did with Mona!

Loving the Mona! And I've done the wax resist thing and it was really fun. This also reminded me of a similar project I did in jr high. Using crayons, we drew a picture on a piece of newsprint paper then we alternately crumpled and ironed, crumpled and ironed until the the paper became like fabric. The wax softened the paper. I don't remember what we did with it though. I'll have to do it again just to see what kind of things I can do with it now.

I tried it!!! I love this project, and I'm totally going to make my 8th graders try it.
Einstein
I used glitter crayons for this one, just to see how it would work out.
Yeah, I ripped off the Mona Lisa design. (But I WANTED it!!!) Yours looks better.
