it started with my brother's obsession with 70's owl things we found at garage sales.  so last year, i really wanted to be Mayor McCheese, but i couldn't find good foam so i could carve a giant hamburger head, so at some point, i decided on an owl.  i guess i should mention that i am a 21 year old college student, and even though i wasnt going trick or treating, i am so in love with halloween that i insist on a big production every time.

i knew feathers would be far too expensive for the whole thing, so i found pictures of owl mascots and such, and their costumes were all made of fake fur.  so i bought 1 feather boa, of natural colors, and i pinned that to the front of a tank top.  i cut up an old pair of brown work pants and gave them a jagged (feathery) hem.  i wore those over a pair of orange/black striped tights and then a pair of fishnets over those, for the scaley texture of bird legs.  i had some slippers that are supposed to be bear/monster feet, but they looked perfect with my costume, so i wore those.  the last thing was to make the wings/tail/mask, which i did all as one piece.  i used a combination of sewing and stapling, because the fabric was really thick (i actually wound up breaking the stapler). for the mask/hood part, i took a piece of cardboard and peeled off a flat side of it, exposing the corrugation.  i got it wet and put it in this giant bowl that i cout fit my head in.  when it was flush against the bowl, i dripped a flour/water paste solution in, so that it dried hard in that shape.  then i cut the eyes holes and covered it with fur and felt, gave it some ears, and attached it to the hood.  i believe i wound up spending about $20 on the supplies (the fake fur wasn't extremely cheap, but it was on sale).

no one came trick or treating in my neighborhood, except for a group of teenage girls, and a woman with her son and daughter.  my costume made the little boy cry.

my boyfriend and his brother wore fake mustaches for their costume.  i told him that this year, we better go to a party or something so i'm not just sitting around eating candy by myself in my costume.

I always insist on dressing up too.. And I'm 22. I love halloween. But I never go anywhere, I'm kinda antisocial. Anyway, goodwill and other thrift stores have oodles and oodles of 70's owl stuff. It'd be easy to fill an entire house with it (if you were so inclined). Anyway, I love the costume. Very creative.

Oh, god....I love love LOVE that costume.  And I love owls (especially those from the 40s and 50s), and NEVER thought of that for a costume.  Kudos!
