I just came back from a trip to the east coast and I had a chance to collect sea shells when I went to the beach. I also picked up the top of a crab carapace and the legs of the critter as well.  They don't stink yet, but I'm really worried that they might break.  Is there a way to preserve them and give them enough strength so I can make them into jewelry or a keychain or something?

I'd soak them a few weeks in disinfectant (Dettol if you can get that in the USA), let them dry and then varnish them very heavily, maybe adding a few coats of dilute glue - make sure you use something that dries transparent!  That will make them as strong as possible, but you will still need to be careful where you put them.

You could also set them in resin, but that will give you a chunky block rather than a natural form.
