On a recent trip to Target I saw a pillow made of ribbon. The cost was $19.99, and I knew I could make it for way less, especially since I already had most of the materials on hand. Smiley

While my daughter is home from college I have been redoing her room in pink, black and white (her choice of colors, but it is turning out great). The first ribbon pillow I made is for her room.

This is the second one:

Both on her bed:

----------------------------------
Tutorial

Supplies:
  • ribbon - assorted colors or all one depending on what you like
  • fabric for backing, and back of pillow - amount depends on size of pillow you are making
  • matching thread to sew
  • fiberfill or pillow form

1) Take ribbon and cut into even lengths for weaving.
2) Attach even number of strips of ribbon on one side, and top of a backing fabric along the left edge. This will hold the ribbon while you are weaving it.
3) Begin weaving the ribbons from the left corner, and working your way to the right and bottom. you can use straight pins to secure it on the ends if needed.
4) Once all pieces are woven to complete the form of the pillow tack or sew a small stitch on the ends to hold in place while forming your pillow.
5) Pin right side of fabric to right side of woven ribbon, and sew around edges. Leave enough area to stuff your pillow.
6) Stuff your pillow then stitch closed the opening.

That should complete your pillow. Hope this tutorial helps.  Smiley

Using a fabric backing I attached the top of the ribbon, and then wove the alternating ribbons. Then I tacked the ending pieces at the opposite end. Very easy to make. Smiley

HSG- I was inspired by your pillows, so I made a cover for a throw pillow from my couch.  Here is how it turned out:

I used grosgrain ribbons like you did on your first pillow (I don't know if you can tell from the picture.)
It got a little tricky, I think because the ribbons were so long?  (About 14 inches)  As I was weaving them, they would loosen... But it turned out great!  Thanks for the idea!

Love them!  I've read that you can use fusible webbing to keep the ribbons in place too.  I'm dying to try this.  Ribbon pillows are beautiful -- and yours especially.

If you check the first post in this thread you will see the pink and black ribbin pillow I made for my daughter's pink and black room make-over. Well, I finally finished the room yesterday, and here are the rest of the images I have taken.

Another ribbin pillow:

The bed made:

The curtains:

The hardest part of the room I did not take pics of was the plastering I did on all the walls. The room is huge at 20x10, and ceilings of 10 ft high. I am very pleased with the outcome of the room. Smiley

By the way my daughter is 21, and a senior in college. So this will eventually be my sewing room when she graduates, and moves. Wink

Wow, I'm jealous, that room is awesome! (and I can't help but LOVE that tall pink kitty sitting on the desk). I think black and pink work really well together (but with all my pets, black is out of the question).

The amount of ribbon all depends on what size you want the pillow.

The first one is very small, and probably only used about 2 yards. The second pillow is larger, but so is the ribbon. It only took about 2 yards also.  Smiley

Thanks for giving me a great idea for the bag of ribbon my dad gave me!!  It's been sitting in the bottom of a bin for ages, now I can put it to good use.

p.s. - the finished room is very chic.  your daughter's very lucky to have such an awesome mom like you!

Thank you loreleiariadne!

This is a great way to use scrap ribbon. I'm also thinking of trying to do some sort of blanket, too. I have sooo much ribbon, and many pieces too small to use for anything. But I cannot stand to throw it away, and want to find a use for it all.

Thank you too for the lovely compliment on my Mom skills.  Smiley
